Former South African President’s Daughter Resigns Amid Ukraine Mercenary Investigation

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma, has resigned from her position as a lawmaker following allegations that she tricked 17 South African men into joining Russian mercenary forces fighting in Ukraine, her party announced Friday.

Zuma-Sambudla had served as a parliamentary representative for the MK Party, an opposition group founded by her father in 2023 after his expulsion from the African National Congress (ANC), South Africa’s longtime ruling party. She had only held her seat since June 2024.

South African police confirmed they are investigating Zuma-Sambudla’s alleged role in recruiting the men under false pretenses. According to authorities, the 17 South African men, aged between 20 and 39, believed they were accepting legitimate employment contracts when they left the country.

The South African government revealed earlier this month that it had received distress calls from the men, who reported being trapped in Ukraine’s war-torn eastern Donbas region. The area has been a focal point of intense fighting since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.

An affidavit submitted by Zuma-Sambudla’s half-sister, Nkosazana Bonganini Zuma-Mncube, alleges that Zuma-Sambudla and two unidentified accomplices deceived the men by promising security training opportunities in Russia. Instead, the men were reportedly handed over to a Russian mercenary organization and forced to participate in combat operations.

The document further claims that eight of the 17 men are members of the extended Zuma family, adding another layer of complexity to the already sensitive case.

Nkosinathi Nhleko, national chairman of the MK Party, confirmed Zuma-Sambudla’s resignation during a press conference on Friday. He stated that she had provided party officials with a report about the alleged involvement of young South Africans in military operations in Ukraine, though he declined to share specifics, citing the “sensitivity” of the ongoing situation.

Nhleko firmly denied any MK Party involvement in sending South Africans to Russia and pledged that the party would engage with the affected families and “support them in their efforts for the return of these young people.”

South Africa’s foreign ministry and police are collaborating with international law enforcement agencies to repatriate the men, according to the parliamentary committee on foreign relations. The case highlights growing concerns about mercenary recruitment practices targeting vulnerable individuals from developing nations for deployment in conflict zones.

This incident occurs against the backdrop of South Africa’s officially neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The country has faced criticism for maintaining close ties with Russia despite international pressure to condemn Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. South Africa is also a member of BRICS, an economic alliance that includes Russia.

Zuma-Sambudla’s legal troubles extend beyond the current investigation. She is currently standing trial on separate charges related to South Africa’s deadly anti-government riots in July 2021, which resulted in over 350 deaths and billions in economic damage. The unrest erupted following her father’s imprisonment for contempt of court, and prosecutors allege that her social media posts helped incite violence. She has pleaded not guilty to these charges.

Jacob Zuma, who served as South Africa’s president from 2009 to 2018, has remained a polarizing political figure since leaving office. His formation of the MK Party created a significant challenge to the ANC in the May 2024 elections, contributing to the ANC losing its parliamentary majority for the first time since the end of apartheid in 1994.

The Zuma family’s continued involvement in controversial matters reflects the complex interplay of politics, family dynamics, and international relations in post-apartheid South Africa.
