French Widow Returns Home After US Immigration Detention Ordeal

An 85-year-old French widow has returned to her homeland after spending 16 harrowing days in U.S. federal immigration custody, a case that has sparked diplomatic tension between France and the United States.

Marie-Thérèse Ross arrived back in France on Friday, where her three children expressed profound relief at her return. Speaking at a press conference in Orvault, western France, her son Hervé Goix said the family’s “absolute priority” now is to protect her health and wellbeing.

“We are particularly relieved today to see our mother again, to have her back,” Goix told reporters, flanked by his two siblings. “She has necessarily gone through a difficult ordeal.”

The case has drawn sharp criticism from French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, who stated that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement methods were “not in line” with French standards and “not acceptable to us.” The diplomatic rebuke highlights growing tensions over immigration enforcement practices between the longtime allies.

According to court records, Ross entered the United States in June 2023 after marrying a retired U.S. soldier who had been stationed in France during the 1960s. Their cross-continental romance came to an abrupt end when her husband died of natural causes in January, triggering what appears to be a contentious inheritance dispute.

An Alabama judge found that Ross’s stepson—reportedly a U.S. federal employee—allegedly intervened to have her taken into immigration custody after she overstayed her 90-day visa. Goix told The Associated Press that his mother had been in the process of applying for a green card when she was detained.

The circumstances of her detention have raised particular concern. According to records, immigration agents took Ross into custody while she was in her nightgown, preventing her from bringing essential items including her phone, passport, and other identification documents.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security confirmed that federal immigration agents detained Ross in Alabama on April 1 before transferring her to a detention facility in Louisiana—a practice that immigration advocates have increasingly criticized for separating detainees from legal resources and family support.

“Put yourselves in her place, in a country she knows a little bit, it all happened to her so suddenly,” said Sébastien Arrouët, the mayor of Orvault. “We don’t realize the psychological violence. She needs to process all this, and the most important thing is that she is back with us.”

The mayor added that despite her ordeal, Ross was “delighted, happy, and relieved” to be home.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about U.S. immigration enforcement policies, particularly regarding elderly visitors with family ties to American citizens. Immigration attorneys have noted a rise in cases where visa overstays result in detention, even for individuals with pending adjustment applications or strong community connections.

For Ross’s family, the immediate focus remains her recovery. “The essential thing is that she is truly safe, that she regains her comfort, that she is surrounded by her children and grandchildren,” Goix emphasized.

The family has not disclosed whether they will pursue legal action regarding her detention or continue fighting for her inheritance rights in the United States. Meanwhile, French diplomatic officials have indicated they may seek further clarification from U.S. authorities about the handling of the case.

As Ross begins to recover in familiar surroundings, her case serves as a stark reminder of how immigration enforcement can intersect with family disputes, sometimes with consequences that reverberate far beyond America’s borders.
