Families Await Identification of Loved Ones After Deadly Swiss Bar Fire Claims 40 Lives

Laetitia Brodard continues her desperate search for her 16-year-old son Arthur, who went to Le Constellation bar with friends to celebrate New Year’s Eve in the Alpine ski resort of Crans-Montana, Switzerland. Nearly 48 hours after a devastating fire swept through the establishment, she still clings to hope that he might be among the six injured people who remain unidentified.

“I’m looking everywhere. The body of my son is somewhere,” Brodard told reporters, her voice heavy with emotion. “I want to know where my child is and be by his side. Wherever that may be, be it in the intensive care unit or the morgue.”

The blaze, one of Switzerland’s worst tragedies in recent memory, killed 40 people and injured 119 others. Authorities have formally identified 113 of the injured, but six remain unknown, giving families like Brodard’s a glimmer of hope amid overwhelming uncertainty.

The severity of burns has significantly complicated identification efforts, with officials requiring families to supply DNA samples. Many victims’ personal belongings, including wallets and identification documents, were reduced to ash in the intense flames. An Instagram account has become an impromptu missing persons bulletin board, filling with photos of the unaccounted for as friends and relatives plead for information about their whereabouts.

Officials from the Valais regional government acknowledged the prolonged anguish families are experiencing. “You will understand that the priority today is truly placed on identification, in order to allow the families to begin their mourning,” said Beatrice Pilloud, the Valais region’s attorney general, during a Friday press conference.

Mathias Reynard, head of the regional government, added: “We are aware of the particularly difficult hours, of the unbearable side of every minute that passes without answers.”

Investigators revealed Friday that they believe sparkling candles atop Champagne bottles ignited the fatal fire when they came too close to the ceiling of the crowded bar. The fire broke out approximately two hours after midnight on Thursday, when New Year’s celebrations were still in full swing.

Marc-Antoine Chavanon, a 14-year-old who rushed to assist victims, recounted the harrowing scene to The Associated Press: “We were bringing people out, people were collapsing. We were doing everything we could to save them, we helped as many as we could, we saw people screaming, running. There was one of our friends: She was struggling to get out, she was all burned. You can’t imagine the pain I saw.”

Many of the injured were between their teens and mid-20s, according to police. The investigation will examine whether sound-dampening material on the ceiling met safety regulations and if the candles were permitted for use in the establishment. Officials plan to review other safety measures, including fire extinguishers and escape routes. The region’s top prosecutor warned that prosecutions could follow if any criminal liability is established.

The international nature of the Alpine resort is reflected in the nationalities of those affected. Among the injured were 71 Swiss nationals, 14 French and 11 Italians, according to Frédéric Gisler, police commander of the Valais region. Citizens from Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Luxembourg, Belgium, Portugal, and Poland were also among the victims. The nationalities of 14 people remain unclear.

One of the missing is Emanuele Galeppini, a promising teenage Italian golfer who competed internationally. His uncle, Sebastiano Galeppini, told Italian news agency ANSA that their family awaits DNA test results, even as the Italian Golf Federation has already announced his death on its website.

The tragedy has cast a pall over what should have been a festive start to the new year in this popular Swiss resort destination. Crans-Montana, known for its breathtaking mountain views and upscale skiing facilities, now finds itself the center of national mourning.

As identification efforts continue, authorities have established support services for affected families and survivors, many of whom are dealing with both physical and psychological trauma from the event. The coming days are expected to bring more clarity as DNA testing progresses, though for families like the Brodards, each passing hour only deepens their anguish.
