Islamic Militants and Separatists Launch Coordinated Attacks Across Mali

Islamic militants and separatists carried out a series of coordinated attacks across multiple Malian cities on Saturday, striking the capital Bamako and several other strategic locations in what security experts describe as the largest coordinated offensive in years.

The al-Qaida-linked militant group JNIM claimed responsibility for the attacks, stating on its website that the operations were conducted jointly with the Azawad Liberation Front, a Tuareg-led separatist organization seeking independence for northern Mali. The partnership between these groups marks a concerning development in Mali’s complex security landscape.

According to the Malian government, at least 16 people were wounded in the attacks, including both civilians and military personnel. Officials did not provide a full death toll but noted that several militants had been killed during the confrontations. In response to the violence, authorities imposed a three-day overnight curfew in Bamako, restricting movement between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The most prominent targets included Bamako’s Modibo Keïta International Airport, where witnesses reported sustained heavy and automatic weapons fire. The airport sits adjacent to a critical air base used by Mali’s air force, making it a strategically significant target. Helicopter activity was observed over nearby neighborhoods as security forces attempted to contain the situation.

Kati, a town near Bamako housing Mali’s main military base and the residence of junta leader Gen. Assimi Goita, also came under attack. A local resident described being awakened by gunfire and explosions. Reports indicated that the residence of Mali’s defense minister, Sadio Camara, sustained heavy damage from an explosion during the assault.

“The force of the explosions is making the doors and windows of my house shake. I’m scared out of my wits,” said one resident of Gao, northern Mali’s largest city, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to safety concerns.

Videos circulating on social media showed militant convoys moving through Kati’s deserted streets in trucks and motorcycles while fearful residents looked on. Similar scenes unfolded in the northern towns of Kidal and Gao, with footage showing exchanges of gunfire and casualties.

The attacks extended to the central Malian towns of Sevare and Mopti, demonstrating the militants’ ability to coordinate strikes across significant distances. In Kidal, a former stronghold of the separatist movement that was captured by government forces and Russian mercenaries in 2023, insurgents reportedly entered the town and took control of some neighborhoods, engaging in firefights with the army.

Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane, a spokesperson for the Azawad separatist movement, claimed via Facebook that their forces had taken control of Kidal and some areas in Gao, though these claims could not be independently verified.

Ulf Laessing, head of the Sahel program at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, highlighted the significance of the coordination between jihadist groups and Tuareg rebels. “It’s especially concerning that JNIM apparently has been coordinating today’s attacks with Tuareg rebels,” Laessing said, noting that the two groups had previously teamed up in 2012 when they overran northern Mali, triggering the region’s ongoing security crisis.

The attacks come amid a deteriorating security situation across the Sahel region. Mali, along with neighboring Niger and Burkina Faso, has been battling insurgencies by al-Qaida and Islamic State affiliates for years. Following military coups, the juntas ruling these three countries pivoted away from Western allies toward Russia for security assistance.

Despite this strategic shift, security analysts note that militant violence has worsened in recent times, with record numbers of attacks. Government forces have also faced accusations of killing civilians suspected of collaborating with militants.

This latest wave of violence follows a previous major attack earlier this year, when an al-Qaida-linked group targeted Bamako’s airport and a military training camp in the capital, resulting in numerous casualties.

The U.S. Embassy in Bamako issued a security alert following Saturday’s attacks, citing reports of explosions and gunfire near Kati and the international airport, and urging U.S. citizens to shelter in place and avoid travel to affected areas.
