Colombian superstar Shakira dazzled an estimated 2 million fans with a free concert on Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Copacabana Beach Saturday night, continuing a series of massive beachfront performances that have become a strategic economic driver for Brazil’s tourism industry.
The performance, part of Shakira’s “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” (Women No Longer Cry) world tour, saw fans pack the sprawling sands hours before showtime. Despite starting over an hour late around 11 p.m., the crowd erupted with excitement as skywriting drones spelled out “I love you Brazil” in Portuguese overhead.
“I arrived here when I was 18 years old, dreaming about singing for you,” Shakira told the audience shortly after taking the stage. “And now look at this. Life is magical.”
The Grammy-winning artist delivered a hit-packed setlist featuring fan favorites including “Hips Don’t Lie,” “La Tortura,” and “La Bicicleta.” She closed with “BZRP Music Sessions #53/66,” a track that followed her highly publicized separation from Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué. Throughout the performance, Shakira celebrated female resilience, telling the crowd, “Us women, every time we fall we get up a little wiser.”
Rio Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere declared the event a historic success, posting on X: “The She-Wolf made history in Rio,” referencing Shakira’s 2009 hit.
The Colombian star’s relationship with Brazil dates back to the 1990s, when she first established a strong connection with Brazilian audiences. Felipe Maia, an ethnomusicologist pursuing a doctoral degree in popular music at Paris Nanterre University, explained that her success in Brazil “has a lot to do with the fact that she comes from Colombia, a country whose culture has many similarities with Brazil.”
For many attendees, Shakira’s performance represented more than just entertainment. “For me she represents the strength of our Latino community,” said Erica Monteiro, a 38-year-old accountant who has been a fan since childhood. “We’re treated as if we were inferior but in fact we have much more strength.”
Concert-goer Hellem Souza da Silva noted that Shakira’s show, like Bad Bunny’s recent performances in São Paulo, helped consolidate Brazil’s Latino identity. These artists “are making it clear that Brazil, Puerto Rico, Colombia and other countries are part of Latin America. And that America is not the United States,” she said.
The free concert is part of Rio de Janeiro’s strategic initiative to boost economic activity between major tourist seasons. Following similar performances by Madonna and Lady Gaga that also drew massive crowds to Copacabana Beach, city officials have embraced these mega-concerts as economic catalysts.
“For us, parties are serious business. Because parties generate jobs, income, development, and identity for the city,” Mayor Cavaliere explained at a pre-concert press briefing. “Our investment in this show will give us a financial return 40 times greater.”
According to a study by City Hall and Riotur, the municipality’s tourism company, Shakira’s performance could generate approximately 777 million reais (around $155 million) through tourism-related spending in restaurants, hotels, and retail establishments.
Data from City Hall shows significant tourism increases during concert months compared to previous years. In May 2024, tourism grew by 34.2% compared to 2023, while 2025 saw a remarkable 90.5% increase over 2023 figures. Airbnb reported in late April a notable surge in bookings from across Brazil, Latin America, and even European capitals like Paris and London specifically for the concert weekend.
The economic impact extended to local vendors as well. Street seller Simone Paula da Cunha arrived on the beach Friday evening, hoping to earn about $100 selling beer and water to concertgoers. Though tired, she expressed excitement about seeing Shakira perform: “I remember her from when she still had black hair. I’m a huge fan of hers.”
For dedicated fans like Wanderson Andrade, a 30-year-old architect who flew in from central Brazil specifically for the show, the concert represented a deeply personal milestone. “I tried to get tickets to see her in Brazil last year but I didn’t succeed,” said Andrade, who sports a wolf tattoo in Shakira’s honor. “Today is a dream come true.”
