Renowned conductor Semyon Bychkov has been appointed as the next music director of the Paris Opera, succeeding Gustavo Dudamel beginning in August 2028, Paris Opera general director Alexander Neef announced Tuesday.

The 73-year-old maestro has committed to a four-year contract that will see him conduct two operas and six symphonic concerts per season, marking a significant new chapter for one of Europe’s most prestigious cultural institutions.

This appointment comes after a period of leadership uncertainty at the Paris Opera. Dudamel unexpectedly resigned from his position in May 2023, just two seasons into what was meant to be a six-year directorship. His departure from Paris followed shortly after his announcement that he would be leaving the Los Angeles Philharmonic to take the helm at the New York Philharmonic for the 2026-27 season.

Bychkov’s path to the Paris Opera podium was not immediate. “After the departure of Gustavo Dudamel from the Paris Opera, there were some what I would call vibrations coming out of the house towards me,” Bychkov revealed during a telephone interview Tuesday. However, his existing commitments as music director of the Czech Philharmonic, a position he has held since 2018 and is contracted to continue through the 2027-28 season, initially prevented him from considering the Paris opportunity.

The turning point came in August at a post-concert dinner following a performance by the Paris Opera orchestra at the Ravel Festival in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, near Bychkov’s residence with his wife, acclaimed pianist Marielle Labèque. “During the dinner I was, if I could use the word, ‘assaulted’ by the musicians, saying: ‘You must come to us. The position is free,'” Bychkov recalled. “That kind of response from the musicians during that dinner was a bit of a trigger in my mind and in my heart.”

Bychkov’s acceptance of the role also comes after a period of personal health challenges. The conductor mentioned feeling reinvigorated following lumbar decompression surgery in September 2024 and a hip replacement three months later.

Born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) to Jewish parents, Bychkov’s life story reflects the global nature of classical music today. He left the Soviet Union with his family in 1974, initially settling in Vienna before moving to the United States a year later. His American career began as music director of the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra from 1980-85, and he became a U.S. citizen during this period.

His impressive résumé includes tenures as music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (1985-89), the Orchestre de Paris (1989-98), and the WDR Symphony Orchestra in Cologne (1997-2010). This diverse experience across American and European orchestras has established him as one of the most respected conductors of his generation.

Though Bychkov first conducted at the Paris Opera in 2007, his upcoming engagement there will be particularly noteworthy as he leads actor Ralph Fiennes’ opera directing debut with Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” on January 26. Bychkov will assume the role of music director designate this August before fully taking over the position in 2028.

His tenure coincides with a transformative period for the Paris Opera’s physical infrastructure. The historic Palais Garnier, the ornate opera house opened in 1875, will see its stage closed for two years following the 2026-27 season. The more modern Opera Bastille venue will also undergo a two-year closure beginning around 2030.

Bychkov views these renovations as an opportunity rather than a limitation. “They’ve done absolutely everything in the genre of opera and ballet,” he noted. “Because of the restoration of both houses they will have to naturally do less of the productions, and I thought that this would present a historic opportunity for the orchestra to develop itself as a symphonic instrument.”

The appointment signals the Paris Opera’s commitment to artistic excellence during a period of transition and renovation, with Bychkov’s extensive experience and musical vision poised to guide the institution through this significant chapter in its storied history.
