After an exhaustive search spanning more than 100 hours and covering an area larger than California, authorities have suspended efforts to locate five missing crew members of a cargo ship that capsized near the Northern Mariana Islands during Super Typhoon Sinlaku.

The U.S. Coast Guard announced the suspension on Wednesday, two weeks after the 145-foot (44-meter) vessel named Mariana lost contact with authorities during the powerful storm that struck the Pacific U.S. territory.

“The decision to suspend the search is an incredibly difficult one that is only made after very careful consideration of all available information,” said Commander Preston Hieb of the U.S. Coast Guard Oceania District in a video statement posted on social media. “From working and communicating with the families, I know how devastated they are by this outcome.”

The multinational search effort involved resources from Guam, Japan, and New Zealand, with teams scouring the ocean for signs of survivors, including a missing orange 12-person life raft. Divers recovered one crew member’s body from the overturned vessel on April 21, though authorities have not yet identified which of the six sailors was found.

The Coast Guard identified the six crew members aboard the Mariana as Frederick L. Nosek Jr., Landon Delos Reyes, Jose L. Ramirez, Mohammed A. Rahaman, Chet R. Brochon, and Vincent B. Agulto.

The maritime disaster began unfolding when the crew notified the Coast Guard that the ship had lost its starboard engines and required assistance as Super Typhoon Sinlaku intensified over the region. Communication with the vessel was lost the following day amid deteriorating weather conditions.

Heavy winds initially hampered search efforts, but teams eventually located the overturned ship on April 18, approximately 40 miles (64 kilometers) northeast of Pagan Island, one of the Northern Mariana Islands. Debris, including a partially submerged inflatable life raft, was spotted about 110 miles (177 kilometers) from the ship’s location.

The shipwreck has deeply affected the close-knit island community. Last week, residents organized a shoreline vigil near the 13 Fishermen Memorial Monument, which honors the victims of another vessel that capsized during a typhoon in 1986 – a somber reminder of the region’s vulnerability to powerful tropical storms.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Chalan Kanoa in Saipan released a statement offering prayers for the affected families. “We offer our deepest prayers and ask for God’s comfort and strength to surround their families and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” the diocese posted online Wednesday. The statement also expressed “profound gratitude” to all rescue personnel involved in the search operation.

Super Typhoon Sinlaku caused significant damage throughout the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. commonwealth located about 3,800 miles (6,115 kilometers) west of Hawaii. The powerful storm brought destructive winds and flooding to the archipelago, compounding the tragedy of the maritime disaster.

Maritime shipping is vital to the Northern Mariana Islands and other Pacific territories, which rely heavily on cargo vessels for essential supplies, economic activity, and connectivity to larger markets. The loss of the Mariana and its crew represents not only a human tragedy but also highlights the dangers faced by maritime workers in this remote region, particularly during typhoon season.

“We offer our heartfelt condolences to the families of the Mariana crew, as well as the entire Saipan community,” Commander Hieb said as the search operation concluded.

Local authorities are expected to continue investigating the circumstances that led to the vessel’s capsizing, including whether proper safety protocols were followed as the typhoon approached the region.
