First Lady Melania Trump and Ukraine’s Olena Zelenska have joined forces to expose Russia’s systematic abduction of Ukrainian children, according to Bring Kids Back UA, the organization spearheading efforts to return the children home.

Maksym Maksymov, spokesperson for the campaign, emphasized that while the two first ladies play different roles, their combined influence strengthens the organization’s mission. “Together, they help ensure that no abducted child is forgotten, but apart, one speaks from the center of the crisis and the other carries the message to the world,” Maksymov told Fox News Digital.

Melania Trump’s involvement has already yielded tangible results. Her advocacy efforts helped reunite seven Ukrainian children with their families, followed by an additional eight children in October. Her global platform has proven crucial in raising international awareness of the issue.

“Melania Trump uses her voice as a mother and a public figure with compassion to draw global attention to children who might otherwise be forgotten,” Maksymov said. “When she speaks, people listen, and she chose to use that influence to highlight the suffering of Ukrainian children directly to the person responsible for their abductions. That takes courage.”

In August, the former first lady wrote what was described as a “peace letter” to Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging him to protect children and future generations. President Donald Trump reportedly hand-delivered the message during their summit in Alaska.

While Melania Trump leverages her international influence, Olena Zelenska works on the ground throughout Ukraine. “Our first lady, Olena Zelenska, has been a steady and essential presence in this work. She visits hospitals, shelters, schools and churches across Ukraine, meeting children who have lived through trauma no child should ever experience,” explained Maksymov.

The scale of the crisis is staggering. According to Bring Kids Back UA, which was launched by Zelenska, nearly 20,000 children have been reported taken since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Ukrainian officials have fully verified 9,221 cases, but thousands more remain unaccounted for. Maksymov noted that verification is complicated because “Russia blocks access, hides information and often alters children’s identities.”

The campaign has described Russia’s actions as a deliberate strategy to erase Ukrainian identity. One prominent case highlighted by Ukrainian officials involves Bohdan Yermokhin, who was reportedly pressured to abandon his Ukrainian identity while in Russia and subjected to propaganda aimed at changing his perception of his homeland.

“Russia is spending billions on systems that militarize and indoctrinate these children rather than return them,” Maksymov claimed. The organization alleges that the systematic removal of children is part of a calculated effort to strike at Ukraine’s future.

In response to advocacy efforts, Ukraine has criminalized the deportation of children, their forced militarization, and any obstruction of their return. Sanctions have also been imposed on individuals involved in abductions and illegal adoptions.

The humanitarian crisis has drawn bipartisan support in the United States. Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat, has praised Melania Trump as America’s “secret weapon” against what he termed Putin’s “war criminality.”

For Ukraine, the return of these children remains a non-negotiable condition for any future peace settlement. “Ukraine’s position is clear. Every abducted child must be returned unconditionally. There can be no peace while even one child remains in Russia’s hands,” Maksymov stated firmly.

The campaign continues to document cases while working through diplomatic, legal, and humanitarian channels to secure the children’s return. Both first ladies have emphasized that beyond the immediate conflict, this is fundamentally about protecting children’s rights and preserving their cultural identity during a time of extreme vulnerability.

“War has taken away their childhood,” Maksymov concluded. “Children live with bombings, displacement, fear, and the loss of everything familiar. This is calculated. It is systematic, and it is aimed at Ukraine’s future.”
