Russia Unleashes Massive Missile and Drone Barrage on Ukraine, Killing Six

Russia launched one of its largest aerial assaults in weeks against Ukraine early Friday, killing six people and wounding at least 35 others when missiles and drones struck residential buildings in Kyiv and other major cities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia deployed approximately 430 drones and 18 missiles in the coordinated nighttime attack.

The assault created scenes of devastation across the Ukrainian capital, where explosions lit up the night sky and left gaping holes in apartment buildings. Among the injured was a pregnant woman, according to Ukrainian officials.

“This was a specially calculated attack to cause as much harm as possible to people and civilians,” Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram following the barrage, which primarily targeted Kyiv but also struck the southern port city of Odesa and northeastern Kharkiv.

The attack represents a significant escalation in Russia’s aerial campaign, which has become a hallmark of its nearly four-year war against Ukraine. Most recent Russian strikes had focused on energy infrastructure ahead of winter, but Friday’s assault deliberately targeted densely populated urban areas, Ukrainian officials said.

Moscow denied targeting civilian areas, with the Russian Defense Ministry claiming it carried out precision strikes on “military-industrial and energy facilities.” Ukrainian officials have consistently rejected such assertions, pointing to the widespread damage to homes and residential buildings as evidence to the contrary.

In Kyiv, eight of the city’s ten districts reported damage. The attack shattered a period of relative calm, as it was the largest aerial assault on the capital in nearly three months. Several residential buildings sustained direct hits, with eyewitnesses describing harrowing escapes.

“I didn’t hear anything, I just realized that my hair was on fire,” said Mariia Kalchenko, a 46-year-old volunteer rescue dog handler. “I turned around and saw that there was no wall, and there was a neighbor’s apartment, the neighbor was screaming, there was no door, and the flames were going from the front door into the apartment.”

Another resident, Iryna Synyavska, 62, reported that three people in adjacent apartments were killed when a ceiling collapsed following a direct hit.

In the Odesa region, Russian drones struck a busy street on market day in the port city of Chornomorsk, killing two people and injuring eleven, including a 19-month-old girl, according to regional governor Oleh Kiper.

The Azerbaijan Embassy in Kyiv was damaged by debris from an Iskander missile, an incident that Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev called “unacceptable.” The diplomatic fallout could be significant as Azerbaijan serves as a key transport corridor for Russian trade with Iran and other Middle Eastern partners.

Ukraine deployed its American-made Patriot air defense systems to counter the attack, successfully intercepting 14 missiles, according to Zelenskyy. The Ukrainian leader has repeatedly appealed to Western allies to provide more of these sophisticated defense systems.

European defense officials meeting in Berlin on Friday pledged continued support for Ukraine, with Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal joining the discussions remotely.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has intensified its own long-range attacks against Russian territory, striking oil refineries and military manufacturing facilities. According to a source in Ukraine’s Security Service, Ukrainian forces damaged an oil depot at the Sheskharis transshipment complex in Novorossiysk, Russia’s second-largest port for oil exports. The attack reportedly damaged oil-loading infrastructure and pipelines, causing a significant fire.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed its forces intercepted 216 Ukrainian drones overnight across several regions, including annexed Crimea. Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine had used a modified version of domestically produced Neptune missiles to strike targets deep inside Russia.

As winter approaches, military analysts warn that Russia may be shifting its strategy from targeting energy infrastructure to directly attacking civilian areas, potentially to break Ukrainian morale after nearly four years of war. Despite U.S.-led diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict, fighting has continued unabated, with neither side showing signs of backing down.
