A Russian court handed down life sentences to eight individuals on Thursday after finding them guilty of terrorism charges in connection with the 2022 bombing of the Crimean Bridge, a critical supply route linking Russia to the annexed Ukrainian peninsula.

The defendants, who include Russian, Ukrainian, and Armenian citizens, were convicted of participating in the October 2022 truck bombing that severely damaged the strategically vital structure. The explosion killed five people, including the truck driver and four occupants of a nearby car, and required months of repairs to restore full functionality to the bridge.

The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) has publicly claimed responsibility for the attack. However, all eight defendants have consistently maintained their innocence, insisting they had no knowledge that explosives were being transported in the truck involved in the incident.

“We are innocent. We all passed polygraphs. We all proved our innocence,” defendant Oleg Antipov declared from the glass cage in the courtroom after the verdict was announced, according to footage published by independent news site Mediazona. “We cooperated fully. We went to law enforcement ourselves and gave our testimony. Not a single person has testified against us.”

Antipov, a logistics entrepreneur whose company handled the shipment, had voluntarily approached Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) immediately after the explosion when he couldn’t reach the truck driver. Initially released, he was arrested days later.

The trial, which began in February behind closed doors at a military court in Rostov-on-Don, about 100 kilometers east of the Ukrainian border, resulted in convictions for Artyom and Georgy Azatyan, Antipov, Alexander Bylin, Vladimir Zloba, Dmitry Tyazhelykh, Roman Solomko, and Artur Terchanyan. Charges included carrying out a terrorist attack and illegal arms trafficking, with additional accusations of smuggling explosives against Solomko and Terchanyan.

Five additional suspects, including three Ukrainian and two Georgian nationals, were charged in absentia. Russian authorities have specifically accused SBU head Lt. Gen. Vasyl Maliuk of organizing the attack. Maliuk had previously acknowledged in a 2023 interview that he and two “trusted staff members” had prepared the operation using unwitting participants.

The bridge bombing prompted immediate and severe retaliation from Moscow, which characterized the attack as terrorism. Russia responded with extensive bombardment of Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, particularly targeting power grids during winter months and causing widespread suffering among the civilian population.

The Crimean Bridge holds enormous strategic and symbolic significance for Russia. The 19-kilometer (12-mile) structure over the Kerch Strait, connecting the Black and Azov seas, is Europe’s longest bridge and represents a considerable engineering achievement. Construction began in 2016, approximately two years after Russia’s internationally condemned annexation of Crimea, and was completed in just over two years despite strong objections from Ukraine and the international community.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the bridge has been attacked twice – the October 2022 truck bombing and a July 2023 attack using sea drones that killed two people. The structure remains a critical logistical lifeline for Russian military operations in southern Ukraine, carrying both road and rail traffic on separate sections.

For the Kremlin, the bridge represents not just a physical connection but also a powerful symbol of Russian control over Crimea, making any attack on it particularly significant in the ongoing conflict. The harsh sentences handed down to the defendants reflect the Russian government’s determination to demonstrate severe consequences for any actions targeting this strategic asset.
