In a significant escalation of maritime tensions, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has issued a stern warning to China, declaring that “the sovereignty of our hemisphere is non-negotiable” amid an ongoing dispute over Panama-flagged vessels. The confrontation has raised concerns about control of one of the world’s most vital commercial waterways.

The United States, along with Bolivia, Costa Rica, Guyana, Paraguay, and Trinidad and Tobago, released a joint statement condemning China’s detention of Panama-flagged ships. The coalition characterized these actions as a “blatant attempt to politicize maritime trade” that infringes upon regional sovereignty.

U.S. regulators have documented nearly 70 Panama-flagged vessels detained by Chinese authorities since March 8, according to Reuters. American officials believe this surge in detentions is designed to retaliate against Panama and apply pressure on global shipping networks.

The dispute stems from a recent Panama Supreme Court decision that invalidated the legal framework allowing Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison to control the strategically important Balboa and Cristobal terminals on either side of the Panama Canal. These terminals serve a waterway that handles approximately 5% of global maritime trade.

While the current situation involves ship detentions rather than a physical blockade, analysts increasingly view it alongside other contested strategic choke points, such as the Strait of Hormuz. These conflicts represent a growing competition between Beijing and Washington over who will shape the rules governing global trade routes and energy corridors.

China expert Gordon Chang told Fox News Digital that the situation fits into a broader pattern of Chinese influence expansion. “China has used Iran to destabilize the Middle East. In effect, Iran has been China’s proxy,” Chang said, arguing that Beijing employs economic leverage and trade pressure while condemning similar tactics when used by Washington.

Chang suggested that recent U.S. actions against countries like Venezuela, Cuba, and Iran represent a strategic effort to counter Beijing’s influence through its regional partners. “Trump apparently decided that he would counter this sly tactic by taking China’s proxies off the board,” he said.

The Panama Canal dispute highlights the increasing weaponization of trade and strategic infrastructure in great power competition. Chang characterized China’s approach as hypocritical, arguing that “China’s Communists invented hypocrisy” by benefiting from the global trading system while simultaneously using it for geopolitical leverage.

“The elemental truth is that China started this cycle of action and retaliation,” Chang added. “If China had not threatened America, America would not have leaned on Panama. If America had not leaned on Panama, China would not have detained Panamanian vessels.”

For its part, China has forcefully rejected accusations that it is politicizing trade. The Chinese Foreign Ministry called the U.S.-led joint statement “entirely baseless and misleading” and vowed to take steps to safeguard its interests in Panama. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian urged countries “not to be deceived or exploited by malevolent forces” and suggested U.S. criticism reflects Washington’s own strategic ambitions regarding the canal.

The dispute carries significant implications for global shipping and trade. The Panama Canal serves as a crucial artery connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, allowing ships to avoid the lengthy journey around South America. Any disruption to canal operations or shipping through its terminals could impact global supply chains and commerce.

This confrontation comes amid broader tensions between the United States and China across multiple domains, including technology, trade, and military influence. As both powers vie for strategic advantage in key regions, critical infrastructure and trade routes have become increasingly contested domains in this competition.

The situation continues to develop as diplomatic efforts seek to address the detention of vessels and the underlying dispute over terminal control at one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.
