Rescue teams in northern Germany are engaged in an urgent effort to save a stranded humpback whale caught in shallow waters of the Baltic Sea. The 10-meter (30-foot) mammal remains trapped on Timmendorfer Strand beach, with multiple rescue attempts so far proving unsuccessful.

The situation has become increasingly dire as experts race against time to free the massive marine animal. According to Carsten Mannheimer of the marine conservation organization Sea Shepherd, the whale is still alive, breathing, vocalizing, and occasionally lifting its head, though its condition is deteriorating with each passing hour.

“If the whale can’t get off the beach, it’s a death sentence for the animal,” warned Sven Biertümpfel, another Sea Shepherd representative, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Tuesday morning saw rescue teams gathering to develop new strategies after Monday’s extensive efforts failed to move the animal to safety. The high tide around midnight, which rescuers had hoped would provide enough water for the whale to swim free, proved insufficient.

Previous rescue attempts included using police boats, inflatable vessels, and firefighter drones to guide operations. In one effort, rescuers managed to position the whale with its head toward deeper water, hoping it would find its way back to sea, but the animal turned back to its original position. Coast guard and fire department boats also attempted to create large waves to dislodge the whale, but without success.

The rescue presents significant challenges. Marine experts explained that the animal, weighing several tons, cannot simply be pulled back into deeper water as this could cause serious injuries. Rescuers did manage to remove parts of a fishing net that had become wrapped around the whale’s body, which may have contributed to its stranding, though the exact cause remains unclear.

Wildlife experts believe the humpback is a young male, as males typically migrate more than females. They suspect it is the same whale that has been spotted several times in recent weeks in the port of Wismar in eastern Germany, approximately 60 kilometers east of Timmendorfer Strand.

To minimize additional stress on the animal, police have cordoned off the beach area with construction fencing, keeping curious onlookers at a distance. “It is very important that the animal does not become even more stressed,” emphasized police spokesperson Ulli Fritz Gerlach.

Despite the restrictions, local residents and visitors have gathered at a distance, expressing concern for the struggling marine mammal. Stefan Stauch, who came from nearby Scharbeutz with his wife, said they had heard the whale’s sounds during the night. “Poor thing. I hope he can still be saved,” Stauch remarked. “We had hoped that the rising tide during the night would free him, but that didn’t work out.”

Humpback whale strandings in the Baltic Sea are rare events. These massive creatures typically inhabit deeper ocean waters and follow migratory patterns between feeding and breeding grounds. The Baltic Sea, with its relatively shallow waters and narrow connections to the North Sea, is not a natural habitat for humpbacks.

The rescue operation continues as marine conservation experts explore additional methods to help the stranded whale. With time working against them, rescuers remain committed to saving the animal while ensuring their methods don’t cause additional harm or stress to the already vulnerable mammal.

Local marine biologists are monitoring the whale’s vital signs while developing strategies that might work with the next high tide, which represents perhaps the best chance for the animal’s survival.
