Malaysian authorities on Monday recovered five more bodies from a migrant boat tragedy off the northern coast of Langkawi island, raising the death toll to 12. The victims—two men, two women, and a boy—were found in waters near the Thailand border, according to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.
First Admiral Romli Mustafa said in a statement that an estimated 70 people were aboard the vessel when it capsized last week. Thirteen survivors have been rescued over the past two days, while dozens remain missing as search operations continue.
The ill-fated journey began in Buthidaung, a town in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, where approximately 300 people boarded a larger vessel. Officials report that as the ship approached Malaysian waters, passengers were transferred to three smaller boats. One of these vessels is believed to have sunk near Thailand’s Tarutao island on Thursday.
Malaysian rescuers have expanded their search area, supported by aerial surveillance, and will continue operations on Tuesday. The exact timing and location of the capsizing remain unclear, as does the fate of the other two boats that departed from the original vessel.
Authorities have confirmed that some of the rescued individuals are Rohingya Muslims fleeing persecution in Myanmar. The Rohingya, a stateless minority group, have faced decades of discrimination and violence in Myanmar, forcing many to seek refuge in neighboring countries despite treacherous journeys.
Malaysia has become a preferred destination for Rohingya refugees due to its predominantly Muslim population and perceived cultural compatibility. The country currently hosts over 117,670 Rohingya registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), comprising approximately 59 percent of Malaysia’s total refugee population.
However, the Malaysian government has grown increasingly concerned about the continuous influx of refugees, fearing strain on national resources and social services. In January, Malaysian authorities turned away two boats carrying nearly 300 people believed to be Rohingya refugees, signaling a harder stance on irregular maritime arrivals.
This latest tragedy highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis affecting the Rohingya community, who continue to risk their lives on dangerous sea journeys. The route from Myanmar to Malaysia is notorious for its hazards, with overcrowded boats frequently capsizing or being abandoned by smugglers.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly called for regional cooperation to address the root causes of the crisis and provide safe, legal pathways for those seeking protection. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has faced criticism for its limited response to the Rohingya situation, with policy approaches varying significantly among member states.
The maritime enforcement agencies of Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia have increased patrols in recent years, but migrants continue to attempt the perilous crossing, often paying substantial sums to human traffickers who promise safe passage.
As search and rescue operations continue off Langkawi, authorities face the grim task of recovering more bodies while maintaining hope of finding survivors. The tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the desperate measures taken by those fleeing persecution and the ongoing challenges faced by countries in the region as they balance humanitarian obligations with domestic concerns.
