Rare 11,000-carat ruby found in Myanmar’s conflict-hit Mogok

Myanmar miners have unearthed a massive ruby weighing 11,000 carats (2.2 kilograms), marking it as the second-largest ruby by weight ever discovered in the country, according to a report published Friday by Myanmar’s state media.

The remarkable gemstone was discovered in mid-April near Mogok, a town in the upper Mandalay region known as the epicenter of Myanmar’s gemstone industry. The discovery came shortly after traditional New Year celebrations in a region that has recently been engulfed in intense fighting as part of Myanmar’s ongoing civil conflict.

Although the newly discovered ruby weighs approximately half as much as the record-holder—a 21,450-carat (4.29 kilograms) stone found in 1996—experts consider this recent find potentially more valuable due to its superior quality. The state media describes the ruby as having a distinctive purplish-red color with yellowish undertones, moderate transparency, and a highly reflective surface—characteristics that significantly enhance its market value.

Myanmar has long dominated the global ruby market, producing approximately 90% of the world’s supply, primarily from the Mogok and Mong Hsu regions. These “pigeon-blood” rubies, as the finest specimens are known, command premium prices in international markets, particularly in China and other Asian countries where red is culturally associated with good fortune.

The gemstone industry represents a critical economic sector for Myanmar, generating substantial revenue through both legitimate trade and smuggling operations. However, this lucrative industry has faced increasing international scrutiny and calls for boycotts in recent years.

Human rights organizations, including the Britain-based Global Witness, have urged jewelers worldwide to cease purchasing Myanmar-sourced gems. These advocates argue that the gemstone trade has historically provided essential funding for military governments that have ruled the country for much of its modern history.

The political context surrounding this discovery is particularly significant. The ruby was recently examined by President Min Aung Hlaing, the army chief who led the military takeover in 2021, and his Cabinet at his office in Naypyitaw. Earlier this year, Myanmar installed what it describes as a civilian government following elections that international observers and opposition groups widely condemned as fraudulent. These elections returned Min Aung Hlaing to power, reinforcing military control over the country.

Gemstone mining in Myanmar is inextricably linked to the country’s complex web of internal conflicts. Various ethnic armed groups fighting for autonomy rely on mining operations to finance their activities, further complicating the political landscape and perpetuating decades of instability.

The security situation in Mogok itself illustrates these dynamics. In July 2024, the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), a guerrilla force representing the Palaung ethnic minority, captured the town and temporarily took control of its mining operations. Control was later returned to Myanmar’s military as part of a China-mediated ceasefire agreement finalized late last year.

The discovery of such a significant ruby amid this backdrop of conflict highlights the paradoxical nature of Myanmar’s natural resources—immensely valuable yet often exacerbating political tensions rather than benefiting the broader population.

Gemologists and industry experts will be closely monitoring what happens to this exceptional ruby. Typically, stones of this caliber undergo careful cutting and polishing before entering the high-end jewelry market or being acquired by museums or private collectors. Given its size and quality, this particular ruby could potentially set new price records if it reaches international auction houses.

The fate of this extraordinary gemstone remains uncertain in a country where natural treasures continue to emerge against a backdrop of ongoing political turmoil and armed conflict.
