Russian President Vladimir Putin was caught on camera with an unmoved expression as he watched a humanoid robot perform a dance routine at an artificial intelligence exhibition in Moscow on Wednesday.

Video footage of the encounter showed the robot, named Green, attempting to gyrate in front of the Russian leader before Putin briefly remarked, “Very beautiful. Thanks,” and walked away. The interaction quickly became one of the day’s most replayed television moments on Russian state TV.

The demonstration took place at the AI Journey conference and was staged by Sberbank, Russia’s largest financial institution, which has been investing heavily in technology development amid Western sanctions. Putin arrived at the event accompanied by his security detail, who visibly tensed when the robot stepped forward to introduce itself to the president.

“My name is Green,” the robot said in Russian. “I am the first Russian humanoid robot with embedded artificial intelligence. This means that I am not just a program on a screen but a physical embodiment of technology.”

Green proceeded to explain its technological capabilities, noting, “Over 40 motors and numerous sensors allow me to move smoothly, maintain my balance confidently and interact safely with people.” The robot then requested its virtual assistant to play its favorite track before launching into a dance routine set to the folk-pop song “The Sun Rose High.”

During the performance, security personnel remained vigilant, with one bodyguard notably positioning himself between Putin and the robot to ensure the choreographed display didn’t go awry. The president’s security team has been increasingly visible at public events in recent years, reflecting heightened concerns about his safety amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

This Moscow demonstration stands in stark contrast to another recent Russian robotics showcase that went viral for entirely different reasons. Just days earlier, a different AI-powered humanoid named Aidol made headlines when it stumbled and fell face-first within seconds of walking onstage during its debut presentation.

The back-to-back robot demonstrations highlight Russia’s ambitions to develop domestic technology amid increasing international isolation. Since the Ukraine invasion began in 2022, Russia has faced unprecedented sanctions from Western nations, cutting off access to many foreign technologies and forcing the country to accelerate development of homegrown alternatives.

Russian state media has increasingly highlighted technological achievements as part of a broader narrative about the country’s self-sufficiency and innovation despite international pressure. The AI Journey conference, now in its sixth year, serves as a showcase for Russia’s technological development in artificial intelligence and robotics.

Green represents Sberbank’s efforts to diversify beyond banking into technology. The financial institution has invested billions in AI research and development, positioning itself as a tech company as much as a bank. Under CEO Herman Gref, a close Putin ally, Sberbank has developed everything from voice assistants to autonomous vehicles.

While Russian officials tout these technological developments as evidence of the country’s resilience, Western experts have noted that Russia continues to lag behind global leaders in many key AI metrics, particularly in research output and commercial applications. The country’s technological isolation has complicated efforts to keep pace with rapid advancements in the field.

The Kremlin has not issued an official comment on the robot dance demonstration or Putin’s reaction to it.
