Prince Harry and Meghan kicked off a humanitarian tour in Jordan on Wednesday with visits to a refugee camp and hospital, highlighting their continued commitment to supporting civilians affected by conflict and displacement.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex began their visit at the Za’atari Refugee Camp, where thousands of Syrian refugees continue to live more than a decade after fleeing the civil war in their homeland. The camp, one of the largest refugee settlements in the Middle East, has become a symbol of the prolonged Syrian crisis that has displaced millions since 2011.

Following their refugee camp visit, the couple traveled to Specialty Hospital in Amman, where they met with children evacuated from Gaza who are receiving medical treatment in Jordan. The couple’s nonprofit organization, Archewell Philanthropies, recently provided support to the World Health Organization’s efforts to evacuate injured Palestinian children to Jordan for critical care amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

The royal couple also participated in a high-level roundtable discussion with WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, regional WHO leaders, humanitarian partners, and key donors to discuss ongoing relief efforts in the region.

“It is an honor and a privilege to be in a room full of people with such big hearts,” Prince Harry told the assembled humanitarian workers and officials. “I don’t know how many times you get thanked for all the work that you do — probably not enough.”

Their Jordan visit underscores the couple’s continued focus on humanitarian causes since stepping back from their roles as working members of the British royal family in 2020. Since then, Harry and Meghan have repositioned themselves as independent philanthropists, with particular emphasis on supporting civilians caught in conflict zones.

The Middle East visit comes at a time of heightened humanitarian concerns in the region, with the Gaza conflict having displaced over 1.9 million Palestinians and created urgent needs for medical care, food, and shelter, according to UN estimates. Meanwhile, the Syrian refugee crisis continues to affect millions across Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, and beyond.

On Thursday, the couple is scheduled to visit the Amman office of World Central Kitchen (WCK), the nonprofit founded by celebrity chef José Andrés that provides meals in disaster and crisis zones. WCK has been actively delivering food aid to Gaza during the current conflict, despite facing significant challenges including a devastating incident in April when seven of its workers were killed in an Israeli airstrike.

World Central Kitchen holds special significance for Harry and Meghan, as it was Archewell’s first philanthropic partner. The organization aligns with their focus on direct humanitarian assistance to civilians in crisis zones.

Jordan, which shares borders with Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the Palestinian territories, has long been a critical hub for humanitarian operations in the region. The kingdom currently hosts over 675,000 registered Syrian refugees, according to the UNHCR, though the actual number including unregistered individuals is estimated to be significantly higher.

The royal couple’s Middle East tour highlights not only the ongoing humanitarian challenges in the region but also reflects their evolution as global philanthropists focused on leveraging their platform to draw attention to civilian suffering in conflict zones.

Their visit occurs against the backdrop of continuing humanitarian crises that have strained international aid systems and tested global resolve to protect vulnerable populations. By engaging directly with affected communities and aid organizations, Harry and Meghan are emphasizing the importance of sustained attention and resources for populations displaced and traumatized by war.
