Kosovo’s Prime Minister Kurti Secures Landslide Victory in Early Parliamentary Election

Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti and his Vetevendosje (Self-Determination) party have won a decisive victory in Sunday’s snap parliamentary election, capturing nearly 50% of the vote according to preliminary results released by state election authorities.

The ruling party’s commanding performance placed it far ahead of its closest rivals, with the opposition Democratic Party of Kosovo securing 21% and the Democratic League of Kosovo garnering nearly 14%. The results suggest Kurti is poised for another term as prime minister of the Balkan nation.

“Congratulations on the biggest victory in the history of the country,” a jubilant Kurti told supporters after the results were announced. “Now we have a lot of work ahead of us.”

The snap election was called after a political deadlock that followed the February 9 vote, when Vetevendosje won the most votes but failed to form a government. This unprecedented stalemate marked the first time Kosovo couldn’t establish a government since declaring independence from Serbia in 2008.

It remains unclear whether Self-Determination has secured the 61 seats required in the 120-member parliament to govern alone. Kurti emphasized the need for swift action, stating, “We don’t have time to lose and must move forward together as quickly as possible.”

Hundreds of supporters gathered outside the party’s headquarters in Pristina to celebrate, chanting Kurti’s name as results came in. The voter turnout was approximately 44%, according to election authorities.

The political deadlock has had significant economic consequences for Kosovo, which has not yet approved a budget for the coming year. This has raised concerns about the country’s already fragile economy. Adding to the political calendar, lawmakers will need to elect a new president in March as current President Vjosa Osmani’s term expires in early April.

Kurti, a 50-year-old former political prisoner during Serbian rule in Kosovo, has taken a tough stance in EU-mediated talks with Belgrade since first coming to power in 2021. His hardline approach has strained relations with the United States and European Union, leading to punitive measures from both.

Opposition parties have accused Kurti of authoritarian tendencies and isolating Kosovo from its key allies. Lumir Abdixhiku from the Democratic League of Kosovo had urged voters to “move away from the gloom, the deadlock and the division that has accompanied us for these years.”

Kosovo has faced persistent tensions with ethnic Serbs in the north, which erupted into violent clashes in 2023 that injured numerous NATO peacekeepers. However, there has been recent progress, with ethnic Serb mayors peacefully taking power in the north following municipal elections earlier this month.

On the international front, Kurti has controversially agreed to accept migrants deported from the United States as part of the Trump administration’s immigration policies, though authorities report only one migrant has arrived so far.

Kosovo continues to face significant economic challenges, with one of Europe’s poorest economies. The country is among six Western Balkan nations seeking European Union membership, but both Kosovo and Serbia have been informed they must normalize relations before advancing toward EU integration.

Under Kosovo’s electoral system, 20 parliamentary seats are automatically reserved for ethnic Serb representatives and other minority parties, ensuring representation for all communities in the ethnically diverse country of approximately 2 million people.

For many Kosovars, economic concerns remain paramount. “Young people no longer want to live here,” said Ilmi Deliu, a 71-year-old pensioner from Pristina, expressing hope that the election would bring positive change or “we will end up in an abyss.”

As Kurti prepares to form his government, he faces the dual challenge of addressing domestic economic issues while navigating Kosovo’s complex international relationships, particularly with Serbia and Western allies.
