Pope Francis condemns antisemitic violence following Sydney Hanukkah attack, calls for peace

Pope Leo XIV strongly condemned the “antisemitic violence” behind the deadly attack at a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney, Australia, while offering prayers for the victims during an audience at the Vatican on Monday.

“We pray for those who suffer from war and violence, in particular today I want to entrust to the Lord the victims of the terrorist attack in Sydney against the Jewish community,” the pontiff stated. “Enough of these forms of antisemitic violence! We must eliminate hatred from our hearts.”

The attack at Sydney’s Bondi Beach left at least 15 people dead after a gunman opened fire at a “Chanukah by the Sea” event celebrating the start of the Jewish festival. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has characterized the massacre as an act of antisemitic terrorism, underscoring growing concerns about religiously motivated violence worldwide.

In addition to his public remarks, Pope Leo sent an official telegram of condolence to the Archbishop of Sydney, Most Rev. Anthony Fisher. In the message, signed by the Vatican Secretary of State, the Pope expressed hope that “those tempted by violence will undergo conversion and seek the path of peace and solidarity.”

The Pope’s comments come amid a global rise in antisemitic incidents, particularly in the wake of ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Religious leaders worldwide have increasingly called for interfaith dialogue and understanding during this period of heightened tensions.

During the same Vatican audience, which focused on the presentation of Christmas decorations donated by various Italian regions, Pope Leo also delivered a strong anti-abortion message. The pontiff drew attention to the Nativity scene installed in the Vatican’s audience hall, which was donated by Costa Rica and featured a distinctive element: 28,000 colored ribbons representing what he described as “lives saved from abortion.”

“Each of these 28,000 colored ribbons that decorate the scene represent a life saved from abortion thanks to the prayer and support provided by Catholic organizations to many mothers in need,” Leo explained. He expressed gratitude to the artist for conveying a message that “life is protected from conception.”

The pontiff connected the Christmas season’s traditional symbols to broader themes of life and hope. Speaking about the evergreen fir trees donated for Vatican Christmas displays, Leo noted they are “a sign of life and recall the hope that isn’t lacking even in the winter cold.”

These dual messages—condemning religious violence while affirming the Church’s pro-life stance—reflect the Vatican’s continued emphasis on what it considers core moral issues during the holiday season. The timing of these statements during Hanukkah and the Advent season leading to Christmas highlights the Pope’s focus on peace and human dignity across faith traditions.

Religious violence has become an increasingly pressing concern for global faith leaders in recent years, with attacks targeting houses of worship and religious gatherings in numerous countries. The Sydney attack represents one of the deadliest incidents targeting the Jewish community in Australia’s history.

As communities worldwide celebrate various winter religious observances, Pope Leo’s message underscores calls for unity and rejection of hatred during what should be a season of peace and goodwill.
