London police launched an investigation Friday after suspicious items were discovered near the Israeli Embassy in the upscale Kensington Gardens area, prompting security concerns and a significant police presence at the scene.

Metropolitan Police officers, some wearing protective clothing, established a security cordon around the embassy while conducting a thorough examination of the discarded items. Police vans and a white forensic tent were visible as authorities restricted public access to the surrounding area.

“We do not believe there to be any increased public safety risk at this stage, but we would urge people to avoid the area while officers carry out their work,” a police spokesperson said in a statement. The spokesperson emphasized that the embassy itself had not been directly attacked.

Investigators are examining potential connections between the unidentified items and a threatening video recently posted online. The video allegedly claimed that the embassy would be attacked using drones carrying dangerous substances. Counter Terrorism Policing London has been notified and is monitoring the situation closely.

According to PA Media, the video appears to have been shared by Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia (the Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right). The footage reportedly shows a target superimposed over an image of the Israeli embassy and individuals in hazardous material suits operating drones.

This isn’t the first time the group has been linked to threats against Jewish institutions. Last month, the same organization allegedly posted footage on Telegram showing a map of north London where four ambulances belonging to a Jewish charity were set on fire, along with video of the vehicles ablaze. The incident represented a disturbing escalation in antisemitic attacks in the UK capital.

Israeli government officials have described Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia as a recently established organization with suspected links to “an Iranian proxy.” The group has reportedly claimed responsibility for attacks on synagogues in Belgium and the Netherlands, suggesting a coordinated campaign of intimidation against Jewish communities across Europe.

The investigation comes amid heightened tensions and increased security concerns for Jewish institutions throughout Europe. Since the Israel-Hamas conflict began in October 2023, many countries have reported significant spikes in antisemitic incidents, prompting increased security measures at synagogues, schools, and diplomatic facilities.

British authorities have been on high alert, with police increasing patrols around Jewish community buildings and diplomatic missions. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper recently announced additional funding for community security programs, acknowledging the elevated threat level.

The incident at the Israeli Embassy represents a concerning development in what security experts describe as an increasingly complex threat landscape. The alleged use of drones to deliver harmful substances would mark a tactical shift in targeting methods against diplomatic facilities, potentially requiring new security protocols.

Metropolitan Police have not yet released details about the nature of the items found near the embassy or whether they contained hazardous materials as suggested in the threatening video. Forensic teams continue to analyze the evidence while investigators work to determine the credibility of the threat.

The Israeli Embassy in London has been the site of frequent protests since the escalation of the conflict in Gaza but has maintained robust security measures throughout. Embassy officials declined to comment on the specific details of the ongoing investigation but expressed appreciation for the swift response from British security forces.

Local residents reported significant disruption as police cordoned off sections of Kensington Gardens, a popular public space that attracts numerous visitors, particularly during summer months. Authorities have not provided a timeline for when normal access to the area might resume.
