The pilots killed in Sunday’s collision between a plane and a fire truck on a runway in New York were two young, ambitious Canadian men who had long dreamed of becoming pilots.
Antoine Forest and Mackenzie Gunther were operating the Air Canada jet that was landing at New York’s LaGuardia Airport when the fatal accident occurred. While officials have not yet publicly identified the two men, their identities were confirmed separately by a family member speaking to The Associated Press and a Canadian educational institution.
The regional jet from Montreal was carrying approximately 70 passengers and crew when it collided with a fire truck on the runway. About 40 people from the aircraft and two individuals from the fire truck required hospitalization, some with serious injuries. Most were released by Monday morning, according to authorities.
“These were two young men at the start of their careers,” FAA Administrator Brian Bedford told reporters on Monday. “It’s an absolute tragedy that we’re sitting here with their loss.”
Federal investigators have launched a probe into the cause of the accident. On Tuesday, officials revealed that a runway warning system failed to sound an alarm moments before the collision. Investigators are examining the role of air traffic controllers and their actions while managing a late-night emergency involving another aircraft. The crash comes during a particularly challenging period at U.S. airports due to a partial government shutdown.
Antoine Forest was identified by his great-aunt Jeannette Gagnier, who told the AP that Forest had always dreamed of becoming a pilot. According to his LinkedIn profile, Forest had worked for two airlines over the past five years. His Facebook page indicated he was from Coteau-du-Lac, a small city in southwestern Québec.
The mayor of Coteau-du-Lac, Andrée Brosseau, offered condolences to Forest’s family in a statement on Tuesday. “Antoine was one of our own. In a community like ours, everyone knows someone who knew him. His passing represents an immense loss for our entire community,” Brosseau wrote.
In a heartfelt social media tribute, Antoine’s brother Cédric Forest shared a childhood photo of them together. “Have a safe flight, my brother! Oh yes, we’ve often heard that phrase, but this time will be the last,” he wrote. “You were coming and going in the wind, always full of new projects in mind. Gone again in the wind too soon to say goodbye I love you brother you can leave with your head held high.”
A woman identifying herself as Forest’s girlfriend, who is also a pilot, posted a photo of the couple on Facebook Tuesday with the caption “the love of my life.”
Mackenzie Gunther graduated in 2023 from Seneca Polytechnic in Toronto with an Honors Bachelor of Aviation Technology degree, according to a statement from the institution. He immediately joined the Jazz Aviation Pathways Program, a training program operated by Air Canada. The flight involved in Sunday’s crash was a Jazz Aviation plane operating on behalf of Air Canada.
“Seneca sends our deepest condolences to Mr. Gunther’s family and friends, and to his former colleagues and professors. He will be deeply missed,” the school stated. The institution lowered its flags to half-staff on Tuesday to honor Gunther.
Despite the tragedy, some observers have noted it was remarkable that more people weren’t injured in the collision. Passenger Clément Lelièvre credited the pilots’ “incredible reflexes” with saving numerous lives. He described how they applied extremely hard braking just as the plane touched down, likely preventing a worse outcome.
The accident highlights the inherent risks in aviation, even for experienced professionals. As the investigation continues, questions remain about communication protocols, runway safety measures, and emergency response procedures at one of the nation’s busiest airports.
Industry experts note that runway incursions, though rare, remain a persistent safety concern in commercial aviation, with the FAA implementing various technological and procedural safeguards in recent years to prevent such incidents.
