Russia Confirms Use of Oreshnik Missile in Latest Ukraine Strike

Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed Friday that its military deployed the new Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile in its latest assault on Ukraine, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict that has now stretched into its fourth year.

The strike targeted Kyiv and several other Ukrainian cities, causing extensive damage to residential buildings and civilian infrastructure. Emergency workers were seen battling flames at apartment complexes throughout the Ukrainian capital, with several buildings suffering severe structural damage.

Ukrainian officials reported multiple civilian casualties, including the death of at least one paramedic who was responding to the attack. Photos from the scene showed rescue workers attempting to extinguish fires amid the rubble of damaged residential buildings.

The Oreshnik missile represents a troubling new development in Russia’s military arsenal. Defense analysts describe it as a sophisticated intermediate-range ballistic missile with capabilities that potentially exceed previous weapons systems used in the conflict. Such missiles can travel at hypersonic speeds and carry multiple warheads, making them particularly difficult to intercept with existing air defense systems.

“The deployment of intermediate-range ballistic missiles against urban centers shows a clear escalation in Russian tactics,” said Mykola Bielieskov, a military analyst at the Kyiv-based National Institute for Strategic Studies. “These weapons are designed for strategic strikes against high-value military targets, not residential areas.”

The missile’s use comes amid increasing international concern about Russia’s expanding arsenal and willingness to deploy advanced weapon systems against civilian targets. Western defense officials have previously warned that Russia has been developing new missile capabilities designed to evade NATO defense systems.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, calling it “another act of terrorism” and urging Western allies to expedite the delivery of promised air defense systems and allow Ukraine to use long-range weapons to strike military targets inside Russia.

“Every such attack demonstrates why Ukraine needs stronger air defense capabilities and the ability to neutralize launch sites before missiles can be fired,” Zelenskyy said in a statement following the attack.

The strike occurred as Ukrainian forces continue to face pressure along the eastern front, where Russian troops have made incremental gains in recent months. Military analysts suggest the missile attack could be part of Russia’s strategy to demoralize the Ukrainian population while stretching the country’s air defense resources thin.

The timing also coincides with ongoing discussions among Ukraine’s Western backers about additional military aid packages and potentially lifting restrictions on how Ukrainian forces can use donated weapons.

In Moscow, Russian officials defended the strike as targeting what they described as “military infrastructure” and “decision-making centers” in Ukraine. However, photographic evidence from the scene shows primarily civilian buildings affected by the attack.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, Russia has repeatedly targeted civilian infrastructure including apartment buildings, hospitals, schools, and power facilities. International human rights organizations have documented numerous potential war crimes resulting from these attacks.

The use of the Oreshnik missile may also signal Russia’s willingness to further escalate the conflict at a time when some Western officials have expressed concern about “Ukraine fatigue” among NATO countries providing military and financial support.

As rescue operations continue in Kyiv, Ukrainian officials have called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to address what they describe as “a dangerous new phase” in Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
