U.S. Secretary of War Warns of More Casualties in Operation Epic Fury

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth warned that additional American casualties are expected as Operation Epic Fury continues in Iran, with seven U.S. soldiers already killed in the ongoing conflict.

Speaking during a CBS “60 Minutes” interview aired Sunday, Hegseth acknowledged the human cost of the military campaign. “The president’s been right to say there will be casualties,” he stated. “Things like this don’t happen without casualties.”

The Secretary emphasized that despite the losses, American resolve remains strong. “There will be more casualties,” Hegseth continued. “And no one is — I mean, especially our generation knows what it’s like to see Americans come home in caskets, it’s — but that doesn’t weaken us one bit. It stiffens our spine and our resolve to say this is a fight we will finish.”

The operation has already seen significant American losses. Six U.S. service members were killed on March 1 in an Iranian drone attack on Port Shuaiba, Kuwait, while supporting Operation Epic Fury. A seventh service member later died from injuries sustained during an Iranian attack on U.S. troops stationed in Saudi Arabia on the same day.

The conflict escalated last week when the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes against Iran. In response, Iran has conducted retaliatory strikes against Israel and several Gulf Arab states, including Qatar and Saudi Arabia, widening the regional instability.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi took a defiant stance during an interview with NBC News’ “Meet the Press” on Sunday. When asked about potential U.S. ground forces in Iran, Aragchi warned: “We have very brave soldiers who are waiting for any enemy who enters into our soil, to fight with them and to kill them and destroy them.”

The Iranian diplomat maintained that his country would not back down from the conflict. “We never give up, we never surrender, and we continue to resist as long as it takes,” he said. “We continue to defend ourselves and we are defending our territory, our people and our dignity. And our dignity is not for sale.”

President Donald Trump addressed questions about possible ground troop deployment while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Saturday. The president indicated such a move would require substantial justification, saying there would “have to be a very good reason.”

Trump suggested that any ground offensive would follow overwhelming air superiority. “And I would say if we ever did that, [Iran] would be so decimated they wouldn’t be able to fight at the ground level,” he told reporters.

The escalating conflict has significantly impacted global energy markets, with oil prices surging over 15% since the initial strikes. Iran, as OPEC’s third-largest producer, has seen much of its oil infrastructure targeted, with satellite imagery showing extensive damage to refineries and export terminals.

Regional security experts note that Operation Epic Fury represents the most direct U.S. military action against Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, marking a significant shift in American foreign policy in the Middle East. The operation has also strengthened U.S.-Israeli military cooperation while testing alliances throughout the region.

As fighting continues, humanitarian organizations have expressed concern about civilian casualties in Iran and the potential for a protracted conflict to further destabilize the region. The United Nations has called for an immediate de-escalation from all parties involved.

Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill, debate has intensified over whether the strikes constitute an act of war and whether the administration has proper congressional authorization for the military campaign.
