Pedro Pascal was visibly emotional and moved to tears during his second appearance at the CCXP Mexico pop culture convention, where he presented his upcoming film “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu” to an enthusiastic audience of 2,500 fans.
The Chilean-American actor took to the Thunder Stage on Sunday night alongside director, co-writer, and producer Jon Favreau, as well as the beloved character Grogu, to unveil an exclusive preview of the highly anticipated film.
“We’ve been working in secret for years, but we wanted to show it to you and for us it’s a big treat too, it’s the first time we get to share this with the fans,” Favreau told the crowd, who responded with a thunderous ovation.
For Pascal, the transition from the television series “The Mandalorian,” which debuted in 2019, to a feature film represents a significant milestone in his career. “I always had a dream in my heart that would be on a big screen. Because that’s how I developed as a child. I went to the movie theater so much with my family. And I saw the Star Wars movies on the big screen,” Pascal shared, attributing his emotional state to his deep connection with the franchise.
“They are films that really fostered all my dreams,” he continued. “So now to be a part of that and share it with you who see it on a big screen… It’s a dream I never imagined.”
This film marks a significant moment for the Star Wars franchise as well, being the first theatrical release since “The Rise of Skywalker” seven years ago. Set to premiere on May 21, 2026, and filmed in IMAX, the project features an impressive cast including Pascal, Sigourney Weaver, and Jeremy Allen White.
Favreau emphasized that the film aims to appeal to both longtime fans and newcomers. “We wanted to introduce these characters to a new audience,” he explained. “But for the fans who’ve been there forever, like these people, we wanted to evolve the relationship. So it’s no longer about the Mandalorian rescuing Grogu. Now Grogu has leveled up. He’s a Mandalorian apprentice.”
This evolution in the characters’ relationship was also highlighted by Pascal, who appeared at the convention wearing a green Mexican national soccer team jersey in recognition of the upcoming World Cup to be co-hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the United States.
“They’ve always been like a very powerful team, but everyone sees that the Mandalorian is protecting a baby. And now, in this movie, they’re more like a couple, on the same level,” Pascal explained, indicating a significant shift in the dynamic between his character, Din Djarin, and Grogu.
Favreau, who himself has a long history with Star Wars, shared his personal connection to the franchise. “When I was in high school, I was an usher in the movie theater when ‘Empire Strikes Back’ went out. Then ‘Return of the Jedi’ came out, so I’ve been a fan since I was young, but never did I think I’d get to make Star Wars.”
The director also pointed out the advantages of developing a feature film compared to the television series. “We had three years to do this. The choreography, the creatures, the stop motion, the CGI, all of it,” he said. “It’s just been a tremendous ride. I’m so super grateful that the fans are trusting me with Star Wars.”
Pascal’s return to CCXP Mexico comes just one year after his previous visit to the convention, where he presented “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” demonstrating his growing presence in major franchise films. The event further solidified the strong connection between Pascal and his Mexican fans, who packed the venue wearing Grogu ears and wielding lightsabers in celebration of the upcoming Star Wars release.
As one of the most anticipated summer blockbusters of 2026, “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu” represents both a continuation of the beloved Disney+ series and a new chapter in the ongoing Star Wars saga, promising to bring the intimate character-driven storytelling of the television show to the grandeur of the big screen.
