Dutch prosecutors have called for prison sentences of up to 25 years for a Syrian father and his two sons accused of drowning 18-year-old family member Ryan Al Najjar in what authorities describe as an honor killing motivated by her “Western” lifestyle.

Al Najjar’s body was discovered on May 28, 2024, in a lake near Joure in northern Netherlands, six days after her disappearance. She was found with her hands and feet bound tightly with approximately 60 feet of tape. Forensic evidence indicated she had been thrown into the water while still alive, showing signs of both strangulation and drowning.

“They saw Ryan as a burden that had to be removed,” the Public Prosecution Service stated. “Just because she was a young woman who wanted to live her own life.”

Prosecutors identified the suspects as 53-year-old father Khaled Al Najjar and his sons Mohamed and Muhanad, who were 22 and 24 at the time of the killing. Investigators believe the murder took place on May 22, after family members discovered a TikTok video showing Ryan without a headscarf and wearing makeup.

“The video seriously embarrasses the family, according to their posts, as it does not fit within their traditional views,” prosecutors explained. The family, described as practicing a “strict” form of Islam, reportedly took issue with Al Najjar’s refusal to wear a headscarf in public.

Court documents reveal a meticulously planned killing. After discovering the TikTok video, the brothers allegedly visited Ryan in Rotterdam and convinced her to accompany them to a remote location. They brought her to Knardijk, where their father joined them. Prosecutors say they then took her to a secluded park where “no one for miles around could have heard her” cries for help.

DNA evidence has strengthened the case against the family, with the father’s genetic material found under the victim’s fingernails, suggesting he was directly involved in the attack. However, immediately after the murder, Khaled fled to Syria, where he has since remarried.

“[Khaled] fled to Syria immediately after the murder and left his sons to take the blame. Cowardly,” prosecutors stated. “Khaled has completely destroyed his family.” Dutch authorities acknowledged that extraditing him from Syria presents significant challenges, particularly given his new marriage there.

The case has drawn attention to the persistent issue of honor killings within immigrant communities in Western Europe. Such killings, which occur when family members murder relatives they believe have brought shame upon the family, remain a serious concern for law enforcement and human rights organizations across the continent.

The Netherlands has historically been known for its progressive policies on personal freedoms and gender equality. This case highlights the tensions that can arise when traditional cultural practices clash with Dutch social norms and legal protections.

For Ryan Al Najjar, the desire to embrace a more Western lifestyle—including choosing not to wear a headscarf and using makeup—ultimately led to her death, according to prosecutors. The tragic case underscores ongoing challenges in integrating traditional values within modern European society.

The Public Prosecution Service has recommended a 25-year prison sentence for the father and 20 years for each of the two brothers. The brothers remain in custody while their father is believed to be in Syria. The court is expected to issue its ruling on January 5, 2025.

Women’s rights advocates have pointed to this case as evidence of the continued need for protection and support services for women from conservative backgrounds who wish to adopt more progressive lifestyles.

This is a heartbreaking story. The victim’s desire to live freely and express herself should have been respected, not met with such brutal violence. I hope the trial sheds light on how to prevent such tragedies in the future.

  6. While cultural differences can be challenging, murder is never an acceptable response. I hope the prosecutors succeed in securing lengthy prison sentences for these men to send a strong message that this kind of ‘honor killing’ will not be tolerated.
