Swiss authorities began the somber task of identifying victims from a devastating New Year’s Eve fire that swept through a popular bar in the Alpine resort town of Crans-Montana. The blaze has claimed approximately 40 lives, with Italian authorities suggesting the death toll could reach as high as 47, according to Reuters citing Swiss officials.

More than 100 people were injured when flames engulfed Le Constellation bar in the early hours of Thursday, transforming a night of celebration into a scene of chaos and tragedy. Officials have indicated the fire appears to have been accidental rather than deliberate.

The identification process is proving particularly challenging due to the severity of burns suffered by many victims. Mathias Reynard, head of government for the canton of Valais, explained the meticulous nature of the work: “All this work needs to be done because the information is so terrible and sensitive that nothing can be told to the families unless we are 100% sure.” Forensic teams are using dental records and DNA samples to establish identities conclusively.

Officials have reported that a significant proportion of those killed were teenagers and young adults, with many believed to be between 16 and 26 years old. In Switzerland, the legal drinking age is 16 for beer and wine, which helps explain the presence of younger patrons at the establishment.

The international dimension of the tragedy has become increasingly clear. Italy and France have reported that some of their nationals remain missing, and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani visited Crans-Montana on Friday to pay respects. According to the BBC, citing Italy’s foreign ministry, 19 Italians were involved in the incident. Australia has also confirmed one of its nationals was among the injured.

Witness accounts and social media videos suggest the fire may have started when sparklers used during bottle service ignited the ceiling of the bar’s basement. However, authorities have not yet officially determined the cause. Officials said the blaze triggered a violent ignition of combustible gases—a phenomenon firefighters refer to as a flashover or backdraft.

Axel Clavier, a 16-year-old from Paris who survived the fire, described “total chaos” inside the venue. He told reporters that one of his friends died and “two or three were missing.” Though he did not witness how the fire started, he recalled waitresses entering the room with champagne bottles topped with sparklers shortly before flames erupted.

Another survivor told French news channel BFMTV that desperate patrons smashed windows to escape as the fire spread. Frantic parents rushed to the scene searching for their children amid the confusion.

The emergency response was substantial but quickly stretched local resources to their limits. Helicopters and ambulances transported victims to medical facilities, but hospitals were soon overwhelmed. Intensive care units and operating theaters reached capacity, forcing authorities to seek additional help. Swiss officials later announced that the burn unit in Valais was full, and Italy made a specialized burns unit in Milan available to treat the injured.

By Friday, mourners had begun gathering at a makeshift memorial near the cordoned-off bar, leaving flowers and lighting candles as the resort community struggled to process the magnitude of the disaster. The tragedy has cast a pall over what is typically a bustling holiday period in the popular ski destination.

The investigation into the precise cause of the fire continues, with authorities focused on determining how the blaze spread so quickly and whether safety regulations were properly followed at the venue. The incident stands as one of Switzerland’s deadliest structure fires in recent memory, particularly devastating for occurring during what should have been a celebratory occasion.
