Teen Gunman Kills Nine in Turkey’s Second School Shooting in Two Days

A deadly shooting at a Turkish middle school has left nine people dead and 13 wounded after a 14-year-old boy allegedly opened fire with weapons belonging to his father, a former police officer. The incident marks the second school shooting in Turkey in as many days, shocking a nation where gun violence is relatively rare.

The attack occurred at Ayser Çalık Middle School in Turkey’s southeastern Kahramanmaras region, approximately 140 miles west of where another school shooting took place just one day earlier. According to Regional Governor Mukerrem Unluer, the teenager arrived at school with the weapons concealed in his backpack.

“A student came to school with guns that we believe belonged to his father in his backpack. He entered two classrooms and opened fire randomly, causing injuries and deaths,” Unluer told reporters at the scene.

Turkey’s Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci confirmed that eight students and one teacher were among the dead. Ciftci emphasized to reporters that authorities consider this a “sole incident” and not terrorism-related.

The shooting comes just one day after a separate incident at a high school in eastern Turkey, where a student injured 16 people before taking his own life. These back-to-back tragedies represent an unusual spike in school violence for Turkey, where gun deaths are significantly lower than in countries like the United States.

Turkey maintains strict gun control laws, with just 2.6 gun-related deaths per 100,000 residents annually, compared to 14.5 in the United States. Turkish law requires gun applicants to be at least 21 years old and undergo extensive medical clearances and background checks. However, certain professions, including law enforcement, face fewer hurdles in obtaining firearms.

In response to the attacks, Turkish authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation. The Ministry of the Interior announced that four chief inspectors and four inspector generals have been assigned to probe the incident.

The Turkish government has also called for calm and responsible reporting amid concerns about misinformation following the tragedy. The country’s Ministry of Communications emphasized the importance of protecting “societal peace” in a statement posted on social media platform X.

“Managing the process with sound judgment, protecting societal peace, and particularly ensuring the psychological security of our children are of utmost importance,” the ministry stated. “It is essential for our media organizations to act with the utmost sense of responsibility in their broadcasting policies,” adding that “such incidents create a highly fertile ground for disinformation.”

The consecutive shootings have raised questions about school safety and gun access in Turkey, particularly regarding how the teenage suspect obtained weapons belonging to his father. While Turkey has historically experienced lower rates of mass shootings compared to some Western nations, these incidents may prompt renewed discussion about security measures in educational institutions and potential reforms to gun regulations, especially concerning weapons storage in households with minors.

As the investigation continues, local authorities are focused on supporting the victims’ families and the broader community affected by this tragedy, which has left the Kahramanmaras region in mourning.
