Nicki Minaj to Address United Nations on Christian Persecution in Nigeria

Rap superstar Nicki Minaj will bring international attention to the persecution of Christians in Nigeria when she addresses the United Nations on Tuesday alongside U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Mike Waltz.

The high-profile appearance marks an unusual alliance between the entertainment world and diplomatic circles to spotlight what human rights experts describe as a decades-long crisis that has claimed thousands of lives but received limited global attention.

Knox Thames, a human rights lawyer who served as State Department special advisor for religious minorities across three presidential administrations, welcomed the involvement of celebrities like Minaj and television personality Bill Maher in raising awareness about the situation.

“The challenges in Nigeria have been happening for decades, and they’ve largely been ignored. So I welcome these unsuspecting allies shining a light on this,” Thames said. “The body count is just too high to ignore.”

While Thames stopped short of labeling the situation a genocide—noting that such designations involve specific legal criteria—he emphasized the severity of the violence. “This question of, ‘is there a Christian genocide happening?’ It’s a legal question. Genocide is defined by international law, and scholars will debate that. But what’s undeniable is that in the last 20 years, thousands of Christians have been killed,” he explained.

The issue gained additional prominence when former President Donald Trump announced in late October that he was designating Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” due to the widespread violence against Christians in the West African nation.

“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter,” Trump stated on social media. “The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria, and numerous other countries.”

Minaj, who has over 150 million followers on Instagram alone, expressed gratitude for Trump’s statement, writing: “Reading this made me feel a deep sense of gratitude. We live in a country where we can freely worship God. No group should ever be persecuted for practicing their religion. We don’t have to share the same beliefs in order for us to respect each other.”

The rapper’s involvement represents a significant development in bringing mainstream attention to the crisis. Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation with over 200 million people, has struggled with sectarian violence for years, particularly in its Middle Belt region where predominantly Muslim herders and mostly Christian farmers have clashed over land and resources. These conflicts have been exacerbated by extremist groups like Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province.

Ambassador Waltz expressed appreciation for Minaj’s participation on social media: “I’m grateful she’s leveraging her massive platform to spotlight the atrocities against Christians in Nigeria, and I look forward to standing with her as we discuss the steps the President and his administration are taking to end the persecution of our Christian brothers and sisters.”

Minaj responded that she was “grateful to be entrusted with an opportunity of this magnitude,” adding, “I do not take it for granted. It means more than you know. The Barbz and I will never stand down in the face of injustice. We’ve been given our influence by God. There must be a bigger purpose.”

This collaboration represents a novel approach to bringing attention to human rights issues, with celebrities using their platforms to amplify concerns that might otherwise struggle to gain traction in the crowded global news cycle. International human rights organizations have documented systematic attacks against Christian communities in parts of Nigeria, though the government has frequently characterized these incidents as criminal activities rather than targeted religious persecution.

Tuesday’s U.N. appearance is expected to put renewed pressure on Nigerian authorities and international bodies to take more decisive action to protect religious minorities in the region.
