New statue of Bridget Jones joins other film icons in London’s Leicester Square

London’s iconic Leicester Square welcomed a new permanent resident on Monday as a bronze statue of beloved fictional character Bridget Jones was unveiled, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the first film adaptation of Helen Fielding’s literary phenomenon.

The statue depicts Academy Award-winning actress Renée Zellweger’s portrayal of the character, dressed in her signature mini skirt while clutching a diary and pen – emblematic items that have become synonymous with the character’s journey of self-discovery and romantic misadventures.

Zellweger herself attended the unveiling ceremony alongside Fielding, whose wildly successful novels launched the franchise that has now spanned four films over more than two decades. The ceremony marked a significant moment for a character that has become a cultural touchstone for generations of fans worldwide.

The Bridget Jones statue joins Leicester Square’s prestigious “Scenes in the Square” trail, an outdoor exhibit launched in 2020 to celebrate cinema’s rich history in the heart of London’s entertainment district. The installation has become a popular attraction for tourists and film enthusiasts, featuring bronze recreations of beloved characters including Harry Potter, Mary Poppins, Paddington, Mr. Bean, Bugs Bunny, Laurel and Hardy, Batman, and Wonder Woman.

The addition of Bridget Jones to this collection signifies the character’s enduring cultural impact and her place in the pantheon of British entertainment icons.

The franchise began in 2001 with “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” a film adaptation of Fielding’s 1996 novel. The story of a 32-year-old single woman navigating her professional and romantic life in London struck a chord with audiences worldwide, grossing over $280 million globally against a modest budget.
