New coin honors Freddie Mercury and his 4-octave range

Britain’s Royal Mint has unveiled a commemorative coin honoring legendary Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, marking 40 years since his electrifying performance at Live Aid that cemented his place in music history.

The newly designed coin captures Mercury in his most recognizable pose—head thrown back in passionate performance while gripping his iconic microphone stand. A distinctive musical stave encircles the coin’s edge, symbolizing Mercury’s extraordinary four-octave vocal range that helped define Queen’s distinctive sound.

In a touching ceremony at the Royal Mint’s facility in Wales last week, Mercury’s sister Kashmira Bulsara struck the first coin. “As Freddie died young, he didn’t get the chance of being awarded a royal medal for his talents in the music world. So to have a royal coin this way is wonderful and very fitting,” Bulsara remarked during the event.

She expressed satisfaction with the design’s accuracy, noting that “the coin perfectly captures his passion and the joy he brought to millions through his music” and praised how designers captured “the most iconic pose of Freddie, which is so recognizable worldwide.”

Rebecca Morgan, the Royal Mint’s director of commemorative coin, explained that the timing of this tribute holds special significance. Music enthusiasts have long been “calling out” for a Mercury coin, and 2024 presented the perfect opportunity as it marks four decades since the 1985 Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium—a performance widely regarded as one of the greatest live shows in music history.

The tribute coincides with another significant anniversary in Mercury’s career—the 40th anniversary of his solo studio album “Mr Bad Guy,” which showcased his artistic range beyond Queen. Released in 1985, the album featured Mercury experimenting with dance music, disco and other genres while maintaining his theatrical vocal style.

Mercury’s untimely death in 1991 at age 45, just one day after publicly acknowledging his HIV-positive status, cut short a revolutionary career that transformed rock music. His openness about his diagnosis came during an era when HIV/AIDS stigma was at its peak, and his disclosure helped raise crucial awareness about the condition.

The Mercury coin joins the Royal Mint’s “Music Legends” series, which has previously honored other British music icons including David Bowie, George Michael, Dame Shirley Bassey and Sir Paul McCartney. This collection has become a significant part of the Mint’s contemporary commemorative program, celebrating cultural figures who have shaped British identity on the world stage.

The coins will be available for purchase on the Royal Mint website beginning Tuesday. Prices range from £18.50 ($24.40) for an uncirculated 5-pound denomination version to £9,350 ($12,315) for a premium 2-ounce gold proof edition, catering to both casual fans and serious collectors.

In a gesture honoring Mercury’s legacy of philanthropy, the Royal Mint announced it will donate a special gold edition of the coin to the Mercury Phoenix Trust. This charity, established in the singer’s memory after his death, provides vital funding to organizations supporting those living with HIV and AIDS worldwide—continuing the humanitarian work that became important to Mercury in his final years.

Since its founding, the Mercury Phoenix Trust has raised millions for HIV/AIDS initiatives across more than 60 countries, focusing particularly on education and awareness programs in developing regions—a fitting tribute to an artist whose influence continues to transcend borders and generations.
