Mexican lawmakers were filmed in a violent altercation on the floor of Congress in Mexico City on Monday, with female representatives from rival political parties shoving each other and pulling hair during a heated debate over transparency reforms.

The confrontation, captured in a video that quickly went viral, began as an argument between women lawmakers from the right-leaning National Action Party (PAN) and the left-leaning Morena Party, which currently holds governing power. What started as verbal exchanges at the podium rapidly deteriorated into a physical confrontation as Morena representatives attempted to remove PAN members who were occupying the speaking position.

The scuffle erupted during discussions about reforms to Mexico City’s transparency oversight agency. PAN lawmakers had taken position at the podium in protest of what they described as improper conduct by the Morena Party. As the situation escalated, other legislators attempted to intervene, but not before several women were seen grabbing and pulling at each other’s hair.

“We took the podium peacefully, without touching anyone, and the decision made by the majority legislative group and its allies was to try and regain control of the board through violence,” PAN aide Andres Atayde told reporters following the incident.

PAN lawmaker Daniela Alvarez added: “Not only is it vulgar, not only is it aggressive, but it is lamentable that this is the majority governing party for this city.”

The Morena Party, meanwhile, placed blame on PAN representatives. Party spokesman Paulo Garcia countered with similar accusations in a statement to Mexican media: “What worries us a lot is how the opposition is systematically resorting to violence instead of arguments, in the absence of being able to debate.”

This incident highlights growing political tensions in Mexico’s legislative bodies, where partisan divides have increasingly led to confrontational behavior. The Morena Party, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum who took office in October 2024 as Mexico’s first woman president, has faced strong opposition from traditional parties like PAN over its reform agenda.

Political analysts note that such physical confrontations, while rare, have occurred previously in Mexican politics during particularly contentious legislative sessions. In recent years, there have been several instances of lawmakers engaging in physical altercations, including a similar brawl during debates over whether the United States should be allowed to target drug cartels operating in Mexico.

The transparency reforms at the center of Monday’s dispute involve significant changes to Mexico City’s oversight mechanisms, with opposition parties arguing that Morena’s proposals would weaken independent watchdog capabilities. PAN representatives claim the reforms would reduce government accountability, while Morena lawmakers maintain they are streamlining bureaucracy.

The incident occurs against the backdrop of Mexico’s challenging political landscape, where issues of transparency and corruption remain contentious. Mexico has struggled with institutional corruption for decades, and reforms to oversight agencies often trigger passionate responses from both sides of the political spectrum.

Both parties have called for a return to civility in the aftermath of the confrontation, though neither has conceded responsibility for initiating the physical altercation. The president of Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies has announced an investigation into the incident and promised to establish clearer protocols for managing disputes during legislative sessions.

The video of the confrontation has sparked widespread public criticism of lawmakers’ behavior and raised questions about decorum in Mexico’s highest legislative bodies. Civil society organizations have called for accountability and emphasized the need for elected officials to resolve differences through democratic debate rather than physical confrontation.
