Meta Appoints Former Trump Adviser Dina Powell McCormick as President

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has named Dina Powell McCormick as its new president and vice chairman, bringing a finance executive and former Trump administration official into the tech giant’s top leadership ranks.

Powell McCormick previously served on Meta’s board of directors, where she was actively involved in advancing the company’s artificial intelligence initiatives across its various platforms. In her newly created executive role, she will help guide Meta’s overall strategy and oversee the execution of its multi-billion-dollar investments in areas like AI infrastructure.

The announcement, made Monday, received immediate praise from former U.S. President Donald Trump. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump called the move a “great choice” by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and highlighted that Powell McCormick had “served the Trump Administration with strength and distinction.”

Zuckerberg said in a statement that Powell McCormick brings valuable experience in global finance “combined with her deep relationships around the world,” making her “uniquely suited to help Meta” navigate its future growth trajectory.

Powell McCormick’s career spans both government and financial sectors. She served as a national security adviser during the early days of Trump’s first term and previously held positions in the White House and State Department under President George W. Bush. She also worked at the Republican National Committee.

Her extensive finance background includes 16 years in senior leadership at Goldman Sachs. Most recently, she served as vice chair, president and head of global client services at merchant bank BDT & MSD Partners. Her corporate governance experience extends to board positions at several major companies, including oil giant Exxon Mobil.

According to regulatory filings, Powell McCormick had resigned from Meta’s board last December, just eight months after joining as a director. This unexpected departure now appears to have paved the way for her transition to an operational role within the company.

The appointment comes at a strategic time for Meta, which has been working to strengthen its relationships in Washington after years of regulatory scrutiny. The California-based tech company has made particular efforts to rebuild ties with Trump, who was temporarily banned from Facebook following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. The platform later reinstated his accounts.

Industry analysts note that Powell McCormick’s appointment could help Meta navigate the increasingly complex political landscape surrounding tech regulation. Her connections in both Republican circles and global finance provide the company with valuable expertise as it continues its ambitious expansion in artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.

Meta has recently shown a pattern of bringing Trump-aligned figures into its orbit. Zuckerberg has dined with the president at the White House and the company has announced significant U.S. investment plans worth hundreds of billions of dollars. Last year, Meta appointed Ultimate Fighting Championship CEO Dana White, another figure in Trump’s circle, to its board of directors.

Powell McCormick is married to U.S. Senator David McCormick, who served in high-level positions in the Commerce and Treasury departments under President Bush before joining hedge fund Bridgewater Associates, where he eventually became CEO.

The timing of this high-profile appointment also coincides with Meta’s continued push to transform itself from a social media company into what Zuckerberg calls the architect of the “metaverse” – while simultaneously making massive investments in artificial intelligence technology.
