A deadly incident unfolded in one of Tokyo’s busiest shopping districts Thursday when a man armed with a knife attacked a female employee at a Pokémon store before taking his own life, Japanese police reported.

The attack occurred at the Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo, located on the second floor of the Sunshine City complex in downtown Tokyo. According to police, officers responded immediately after receiving emergency calls about a knife-wielding assailant on a rampage within the popular retail location.

The victim, a woman believed to be in her 20s and employed at the store, suffered fatal stab wounds to her neck. Following the attack on the employee, the perpetrator turned the weapon on himself, also inflicting neck wounds. Both individuals were transported to a hospital in critical condition and were later pronounced dead, authorities confirmed.

Tokyo police have launched a murder investigation into the incident. The identity of the attacker and potential motives remain undisclosed as the investigation continues.

An eyewitness who was shopping at the store during the attack described a chaotic scene to the Asahi newspaper. The store was crowded with dozens of customers, including children, when screams for help and the sound of collapsing shelves erupted. Upon turning back, the witness observed a store staff member with blood-stained clothing and a man dressed in black forcing his way behind the sales counter.

Japan’s public broadcaster NHK reported that shoppers fled the area in panic while employees in neighboring businesses quickly lowered security shutters to protect themselves and customers from potential danger.

The Pokémon Company issued a statement on social media platform X announcing the indefinite closure of the Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo location. “We deeply apologize to our customers for the tremendous worry and inconveniences,” the company stated, adding that their priorities are cooperating with police investigators and supporting store staff affected by the tragedy.

The Pokémon Center stores are flagship retail destinations for the globally popular Pokémon franchise, which began as a video game in 1996 and expanded into a multimedia empire spanning animated series, films, trading cards, and merchandise. The Mega Tokyo location is one of the largest Pokémon stores in Japan and attracts both domestic and international visitors, serving as a significant tourist attraction in the Ikebukuro district.

This incident stands out in Japan, a country known for its extremely low violent crime rates compared to other developed nations. While gun violence is exceedingly rare due to strict firearms regulations, Japan has experienced several high-profile knife attacks in recent years, raising concerns about public safety.

The Sunshine City complex, where the attack occurred, is a major commercial hub in Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district, housing numerous retail outlets, restaurants, an aquarium, and office spaces. The area typically attracts large crowds of shoppers, particularly young people drawn to its entertainment and shopping options.

Local authorities have not announced any additional security measures for shopping centers in response to the incident, but the attack is likely to prompt discussions about safety protocols in crowded commercial venues throughout the capital.
