Bahamian authorities have released a Michigan man who reported his wife had fallen overboard from their small boat in early April, as the investigation into her disappearance continues with no charges filed at this time.

Brian Hooker of Onsted, Michigan, had been detained since April 8 for questioning after reporting that his wife, Lynette Hooker, 55, disappeared while the couple was traveling in an 8-foot motorboat between Hope Town and Elbow Cay in the eastern Bahamas on April 4.

“I won’t be able to stop looking,” an emotional Hooker told CBS News shortly after his release, expressing hope that his wife might still be alive. He indicated plans to resume search efforts as soon as possible.

According to police statements, Hooker claimed Lynette had possession of the boat’s keys when she fell overboard, causing the engine to shut down. He said he lost sight of her as strong currents carried her away, forcing him to paddle to shore. He reported her disappearance early the following morning after reaching land.

Law enforcement authorities in the Bahamas consulted with prosecutors who recommended against filing charges at this point, though investigations remain active. The U.S. Coast Guard has also launched a separate investigation into the incident.

The Hookers, married for over two decades, had documented their Caribbean sailing adventures on their “Sailing Hookers” Facebook page. Social media posts from 2023 showed the couple purchasing a sailboat named “Soul Mate” in Rockport, Texas, before embarking on a Gulf of Mexico cruise from Kemah, Texas.

Questions have emerged about the circumstances of Lynette’s disappearance. Her daughter, Karli Aylesworth, told NBC News she found it unlikely her mother would “just fall” overboard, describing her as an experienced sailor who had spent years navigating waters with her husband.

The incident has brought attention to the couple’s relationship history. According to a 2015 Kentwood, Michigan police report obtained by NBC News, the Hookers had previously accused each other of assault. In that incident, Brian Hooker, who was reportedly intoxicated and bleeding from the nose, told police his wife had struck him multiple times in the face. Lynette was arrested and spent a night in jail, though authorities ultimately denied a warrant because it wasn’t clear “who started the assault.”

Brian Hooker has denied any wrongdoing in connection with his wife’s disappearance, according to his attorney, Terrel Butler.

The couple’s home in Onsted is located approximately 70 miles southwest of Detroit, Michigan.

The investigation reflects the challenges of maritime disappearances, which can be particularly difficult to resolve due to vast search areas and limited physical evidence. Small vessel accidents remain a significant safety concern in coastal areas popular with tourists, where changing weather conditions and navigational challenges can create hazardous situations for even experienced boaters.

Authorities have not indicated whether search operations for Lynette Hooker are ongoing or if they have been suspended. In similar cases, searches typically transition from rescue to recovery operations after several days without success.

As the investigation continues, both Bahamian and U.S. authorities will likely focus on gathering additional evidence, including any witness testimonies, vessel examination, and analysis of the currents and weather conditions at the time of the reported incident.

The case has drawn attention to maritime safety in the Bahamas, a popular destination for boating enthusiasts and tourists, particularly during the spring season when many travelers visit the archipelago’s picturesque islands and cays.
