In a striking case that reads like fiction, Pakistani businessman Asif Merchant testified Wednesday that he attempted to hire hitmen to assassinate prominent U.S. political figures, including now-President Donald Trump, then-President Joe Biden, and former presidential candidate Nikki Haley, allegedly on behalf of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.

Speaking through an Urdu interpreter at his attempted terrorism trial in Brooklyn federal court, Merchant claimed his actions were coerced by threats against his family in Iran. “My family was under threat, and I had to do this,” he testified. “I was not wanting to do this so willingly.”

The 47-year-old defendant offered an unusual defense, claiming he expected to be arrested before any assassination could occur and hoped cooperation with U.S. authorities might help him secure a green card. His gambit partially succeeded – the supposed hitmen were undercover FBI agents who arrested him on July 12, 2024, just one day before an unrelated assassination attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania.

“You traveled to the United States for the purpose of hiring Mafia members to kill a politician, correct?” asked Assistant U.S. Attorney Nina Gupta during cross-examination.

“That’s right,” Merchant replied with surprising frankness.

The trial unfolds against the backdrop of escalating U.S.-Iran tensions, with the recent military conflict resulting in the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Trump characterized the strike with the blunt assessment: “I got him before he got me.” The Iranian government has consistently denied plotting to assassinate Trump or other U.S. officials.

Merchant’s testimony revealed his unusual background – a 20-year banking career in Pakistan followed by ventures in clothing, car sales, and import-export businesses. He maintains two separate families, one in Pakistan and another in Iran, where he claims to have been introduced to a Revolutionary Guard intelligence operative in late 2022.

According to Merchant, his regular U.S. visits for his garment business caught the attention of his handler, who trained him in countersurveillance techniques. The U.S. government has designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a “foreign terrorist organization,” a powerful military and intelligence force that held significant influence under Khamenei’s leadership.

Merchant testified that his handler initially tasked him with finding U.S. residents willing to work for Iran. The assignment later escalated to locating criminals who could organize protests, commit thefts, launder money, “and maybe have somebody murdered,” specifically naming Trump, Biden, and Haley as potential targets.

Despite being questioned by U.S. immigration agents at Houston airport in April 2024, Merchant continued his planning – researching Trump rally locations, sketching potential shooting scenarios, and paying $5,000 to the undercover FBI agents he believed were hitmen. He even sent fabricated intelligence reports to his Iranian contact through an elaborate book delivery system.

When asked why he didn’t seek help from law enforcement, Merchant claimed his handler had people watching him. “I had no other option” than to play along, he testified, citing threats against his Iranian relatives.

Prosecutors countered in a court filing that Merchant never mentioned duress during his FBI interviews following arrest. When questioned about this omission, Merchant told jurors he didn’t think agents would believe him because their questions suggested “they think that I’m some type of super-spy.”

“And are you a super-spy?” defense lawyer Avraham Moskowitz asked.

“No,” Merchant responded. “Absolutely not.”

The case highlights ongoing concerns about foreign interference in U.S. politics and raises questions about Iran’s potential involvement in assassination plots targeting American leaders. As the trial continues, jurors must determine whether Merchant’s claims of coercion are credible or merely a desperate defense strategy against serious terrorism charges that could result in significant prison time if convicted.
