British authorities have charged a 45-year-old man with attempted murder following a stabbing attack targeting two Jewish men in London’s Golders Green neighborhood, marking the latest in a series of incidents that have heightened concerns about antisemitism across the United Kingdom.

Essa Suleiman, a Somalia-born British citizen, appeared in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday facing three counts of attempted murder. Two charges relate to the stabbings of Jewish men in Golders Green, while the third stems from an earlier attack in south London on the same day. The Golders Green incident has been classified as terrorism by law enforcement officials.

According to prosecutor Emma Harraway, Suleiman first attacked Ishmail Hussein, described as his friend of 20 years, in south London before traveling to the northern part of the city where he specifically targeted Jewish individuals hours later.

The victims in Golders Green were identified as 34-year-old Shloime Rand, who suffered a punctured lung after being stabbed in the chest outside a synagogue, and 76-year-old Norman Shine, who was wearing a traditional Jewish skullcap when he was attacked at a bus stop.

“As Mr. Shine adjusted his kippah, Suleiman ran towards him and set upon him, launching a series of aggressive blows,” Harraway told the court.

While Rand has been discharged from hospital, Shine remains hospitalized in stable condition. The court ordered Suleiman remanded into custody, with the case transferred to the Central Criminal Court for a hearing scheduled for May 15.

Police revealed that Suleiman had previously been referred to the government’s Prevent program in 2020, an initiative designed to divert individuals away from extremist ideologies. His file was closed later that same year, though authorities have not disclosed the original reason for his referral to the program.

The attack has prompted immediate action from the British government. Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged to increase security measures for the Jewish community, stating that his administration would “do everything in our power to stamp this hatred out.”

This latest incident follows several arson attacks targeting synagogues and other Jewish establishments across London in recent weeks, contributing to growing anxiety within Britain’s Jewish community, which numbers approximately 300,000 people.

In response to the escalating situation, British security officials raised the national terror threat level from “substantial” to “severe” in the aftermath of Wednesday’s stabbing. The “severe” designation, the second-highest on the five-point scale, indicates that intelligence agencies consider an attack highly likely within the next six months.

Government sources clarified that the elevated threat level was not solely in response to the Golders Green attack but reflects a broader assessment of “increased danger from Islamist and extreme right-wing terrorist threat from individuals and small groups based in the U.K.”

Golders Green has long been recognized as one of the centers of Jewish life in Britain, with numerous synagogues, kosher restaurants, and Jewish-owned businesses. The area has historically been considered a safe haven for the community, making these attacks particularly disturbing for residents.

Community leaders have called for calm while welcoming the increased security presence. Local synagogues have implemented additional safety measures, including volunteer security patrols and enhanced entry procedures for services.

The attack comes amid rising tensions and increased reports of both antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents across Europe, with authorities working to prevent further escalation while reassuring affected communities of their commitment to public safety.
