Man arrested on suspicion of involvement in attack at a Manchester synagogue that killed 2

British authorities have arrested a 31-year-old man at Manchester Airport in connection with last month’s deadly synagogue attack that claimed two lives. The suspect was detained upon arrival on an inbound flight, according to Greater Manchester Police, who stated he is being held on suspicion of “commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism.”

The arrest is linked to the October 2 attack outside the Heaton Park Congregation Synagogue in Manchester, where 35-year-old Jihad Al-Shamie, a Syria-born British national, drove a vehicle into pedestrians before launching a knife attack and attempting to force entry into the religious building. Al-Shamie was fatally shot by responding officers during the incident.

Investigators have determined that Al-Shamie had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group prior to carrying out the attack, adding a terrorism dimension to what was already a shocking act of violence against the Jewish community.

The attack occurred on Yom Kippur, the most sacred day in the Jewish calendar, a 25-hour period of fasting, prayer and repentance. The timing of the attack has heightened concerns about targeted antisemitic violence in the United Kingdom, which has seen a troubling rise in hate crimes against Jewish communities over the past year.

Two congregants lost their lives in the tragedy. Melvin Cravitz, 66, died from stab wounds inflicted by the attacker. In a tragic turn of events, 53-year-old Adrian Daulby was accidentally shot by a police officer during the chaos as he and fellow worshippers attempted to barricade the synagogue entrance to prevent Al-Shamie from gaining access to those inside. Three additional men suffered serious injuries in the attack.

This latest arrest follows previous police activity that saw six individuals detained in the greater Manchester region in connection with the attack. Five of those individuals were subsequently released without charge. A 30-year-old man suspected of failing to disclose information about the crime remains out on bail as the investigation continues.

The incident has sparked renewed debate about security measures at religious institutions across the United Kingdom. Jewish community leaders have called for enhanced protection, particularly during high holy days and other significant religious observances when synagogues typically see increased attendance.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper recently announced additional funding for security at places of worship following the attack, acknowledging the heightened threat faced by religious communities, especially in the current geopolitical climate.

Counter-terrorism officials have been on high alert across Europe in recent months, with several countries reporting increased threat levels. The UK’s terror threat level currently stands at “substantial,” meaning an attack is considered likely.

The Manchester attack represents one of the most serious incidents targeting the British Jewish community in recent years. Community leaders have urged vigilance while emphasizing the importance of maintaining normal religious life despite security concerns.

Greater Manchester Police have not released additional details about the newly arrested suspect, including his nationality or potential connections to Al-Shamie, citing the ongoing nature of their investigation. Authorities have indicated they will provide updates as the case progresses.

The police have reassured the public that there is no indication of any immediate further threat related to this investigation, but they continue to maintain an increased presence around synagogues and other Jewish community sites as a precautionary measure.
