A driver accused of ramming his car into a crowd of Liverpool soccer fans celebrating their team’s Premier League championship appeared in court Tuesday as his trial commenced, facing charges related to injuries sustained by more than 100 people.

The incident occurred on May 26 when a Ford minivan ploughed into a street filled with jubilant fans celebrating Liverpool FC’s Premier League title victory. In the aftermath, more than 130 people reported injuries of varying severity. Authorities have stated they believe the driver acted alone and have ruled out terrorism as a motive, though they have not publicly disclosed what they believe prompted the attack.

Paul Doyle, 54, faces 31 separate charges, including dangerous driving and causing or attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent. The charges, which relate to 29 specific victims, including several children, could potentially result in a life sentence if Doyle is convicted.

During Tuesday’s court proceedings, Doyle, dressed in a suit and tie, became visibly emotional and was seen crying as potential jurors entered the courtroom for selection. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges against him.

Following the selection process, twelve jurors were sworn in to hear the case. The prosecution is scheduled to present their opening statement on Wednesday, outlining their case against Doyle. Court officials have indicated the trial is expected to last between three and four weeks.

The incident shocked the Liverpool community and soccer fans worldwide, occurring during what should have been a moment of celebration. Liverpool’s Premier League victory in 2020 was particularly significant as it marked the club’s first league title in 30 years, ending a long drought for one of England’s most successful and storied football clubs.

Public gatherings to celebrate sporting achievements are common throughout the UK, with fans often taking to the streets in large numbers. Safety measures for such spontaneous celebrations have come under increased scrutiny following this incident.

The case has drawn significant attention not only because of its connection to the high-profile sporting celebration but also due to the number of victims affected. Legal experts note that cases involving multiple victims present complex challenges for both prosecution and defense teams, particularly in establishing intent and responsibility.

Liverpool FC, known for its close relationship with its fanbase, expressed profound concern for those injured in the immediate aftermath of the incident. The club, whose supporters are renowned for their passionate following, offered support to affected fans and their families.

The trial comes at a time of increased focus on public safety at large gatherings across the United Kingdom, with authorities reviewing protocols for managing spontaneous celebrations and events.

As the trial proceeds, it will likely examine extensive evidence including CCTV footage, witness testimonies from those present during the celebration, and expert analysis of the incident. The prosecution’s opening statement is expected to provide the first detailed account of their version of events and the evidence they plan to present against Doyle.

The case continues at Liverpool Crown Court, with proceedings expected to conclude next month.
