Norwegian authorities have launched an extensive investigation following an explosion at the U.S. Embassy in Oslo early Sunday morning, mobilizing significant resources to track down multiple potential suspects in what officials describe as a “very serious” incident.

The explosion occurred around 1 a.m. local time (7 p.m. ET Saturday), with witnesses reporting a “loud bang” and thick smoke near the entrance of the consular section. Sebastian Toerstad, an 18-year-old high school student who drove past the embassy during the incident, described seeing “a very thick layer of smoke on the street” and damage to the entrance.

Norwegian Justice Minister Astri Aas-Hansen condemned the attack in strong terms. “This is an unacceptable incident that we are taking very seriously,” she told the Norwegian press agency NTB. The minister confirmed that authorities are deploying “considerable resources” to investigate the incident and locate those responsible.

Police have conducted extensive searches at the scene using specialized dogs, drones, and helicopter support. Despite the intensity of the response, authorities have reported that no explosive devices were found in the area. The blast caused only minor damage to the embassy facility, and no injuries have been reported.

PST, Norway’s police security service, has called in additional personnel following the incident but has not elevated the country’s terror threat level, according to PST communications adviser Martin Bernsen. The attack comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, though officials are cautious about drawing premature connections.

Mikael Dellemyr, operations manager for PST, warned against speculation about potential motives, telling Oslo’s TV 2 that it is “far too early” in the investigation to link the attack to U.S. military actions in the Middle East or to potential terrorist or Iranian retaliation.

The incident in Oslo occurs against a backdrop of increasing threats to U.S. diplomatic facilities worldwide. In recent months, American embassies in various regions have faced heightened security concerns, including a drone strike targeting the U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia that prompted shelter-in-place orders for Americans in the vicinity.

Diplomatic facilities often serve as symbolic targets during periods of international tension. The U.S. maintains extensive security protocols at its embassies and consulates worldwide, particularly in regions where anti-American sentiment may be elevated due to ongoing conflicts or policy disagreements.

Norway, traditionally seen as a peaceful nation with low crime rates, has experienced relatively few incidents targeting diplomatic missions. The country maintains strong security cooperation with NATO allies, including the United States, and has robust counter-terrorism capabilities despite its generally stable security environment.

The attack comes at a time when the United States is navigating complex geopolitical challenges, particularly regarding Iran and its regional proxies. Though no group has claimed responsibility for the explosion, security analysts note that diplomatic facilities often face increased threats during periods of heightened international tension.

Norwegian police have indicated the investigation remains in its early stages, with authorities continuing to gather evidence and pursue leads. Security has been visibly increased around the embassy facility, which is located in a prominent area of Oslo.

The U.S. State Department had not immediately responded to requests for comment at the time of reporting. Embassy security protocols typically involve close coordination between host nation authorities and U.S. diplomatic security personnel following any security incident.

Both Norwegian and American officials will likely provide additional updates as the investigation progresses, with particular focus on determining the nature of the explosive device used and identifying those responsible for this attack on a diplomatic facility.
