Norwegian authorities have launched an extensive investigation following an explosion at the U.S. Embassy in Oslo early Sunday morning, mobilizing significant resources to track down multiple potential suspects in what officials describe as a “very serious” incident.

The explosion occurred around 1 a.m. local time (7 p.m. ET Saturday), with witnesses reporting a “loud bang” and thick smoke near the entrance of the consular section. Sebastian Toerstad, an 18-year-old high school student who drove past the embassy during the incident, described seeing “a very thick layer of smoke on the street” and damage to the entrance.

Norwegian Justice Minister Astri Aas-Hansen condemned the attack in strong terms. “This is an unacceptable incident that we are taking very seriously,” she told the Norwegian press agency NTB. The minister confirmed that authorities are deploying “considerable resources” to investigate the incident and locate those responsible.

Police have conducted extensive searches at the scene using specialized dogs, drones, and helicopter support. Despite the intensity of the response, authorities have reported that no explosive devices were found in the area. Mikael Dellemyr, operations manager for PST, warned against speculation about potential motives, telling Oslo’s TV 2 that it is “far too early” in the investigation to link the attack to U.S. military actions in the Middle East or to potential terrorist or Iranian retaliation.
