Antisemitic incidents in the Czech Republic reached an all-time high in 2024, continuing a troubling upward trend that began following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel, according to a report released Friday by the Federation of Jewish Communities.

The annual report documented 4,694 antisemitic incidents throughout the country last year, representing an 8.5% increase from the 4,328 cases recorded in 2023. The previous year had already seen a dramatic 90% surge in incidents following the Hamas attacks that triggered the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Petr Papousek, who heads the Federation of Jewish Communities in the Czech Republic, noted that the country is experiencing the same “global explosive wave of antisemitism” that emerged immediately after the Hamas attack on Israel.

“Hatred of Jews, especially in the form of demonization of the state of Israel, has become a socially acceptable attitude and has dominated the public space,” Papousek said in the report. He pointed to an “unprecedented synergy” between extremist groups from both ends of the political spectrum, Islamists, and disinformation outlets.

“The unifying element is hatred of Israel, which works with the motives, narratives, conspiracies and myths of traditional antisemitism,” he explained.

The vast majority of incidents—nearly 96%—occurred in online spaces, primarily on social media platforms where antisemitic rhetoric has flourished. However, the report highlighted a concerning rise in physical manifestations of antisemitism.

For the first time in recent years, the Czech Republic recorded four physical attacks against Jewish individuals, all connected to tensions surrounding the Middle East conflict. None had been reported in 2023. Additionally, acts of vandalism doubled, with 12 reported cases of desecration targeting Jewish cemeteries, monuments, and other communal property.

One of the most alarming incidents took place in January 2024 in Brno, the country’s second-largest city, where five teenagers attempted to carry out an arson attack on a local synagogue. Law enforcement officials determined the perpetrators had been radicalized online by Islamic State propaganda. Two of them now face terrorism-related charges.

The rising tide of antisemitism in the Czech Republic mirrors similar trends across Europe, where Jewish communities have reported increased hostility since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war. Many European countries have seen pro-Palestinian demonstrations that sometimes crossed into antisemitic rhetoric, alongside direct threats to Jewish institutions requiring enhanced security measures.

The Czech Republic has historically maintained strong diplomatic ties with Israel, being one of its closest European allies. This political alignment has sometimes placed the country’s Jewish community in a complicated position during periods of heightened Middle East tensions.

Despite the concerning statistics, the Federation’s report concluded that the Czech Republic remains generally safe for its Jewish population of approximately 10,000 people. The country’s Jewish community, decimated during the Holocaust, has experienced a modest revival since the fall of communism in 1989.

Czech authorities have consistently condemned antisemitism and implemented various educational programs to combat prejudice. The government has also strengthened legal frameworks to prosecute hate crimes more effectively.

Human rights organizations continue to monitor the situation closely, with concerns that the prolonged conflict in Gaza could further exacerbate antisemitic sentiments if not addressed through education and community dialogue.
