Japanese literary giant Haruki Murakami is breaking new ground with his forthcoming novel, marking the first time in his celebrated career that he has crafted a full-length work featuring a female protagonist. “The Tale of KAHO,” scheduled for release on July 3 in both print and digital formats, follows the journey of a 26-year-old picture book author named Kaho.

The novel represents Murakami’s first major publication in three years, following his previous work “The City and Its Uncertain Walls,” which explored themes of love, loss, and the boundaries between reality and the subconscious through a male protagonist—a recurring pattern throughout his extensive bibliography.

Shinchosha Publishing Co. confirmed on Thursday that Kaho’s character represents a significant departure for the internationally renowned author, whose works have been translated into dozens of languages and have earned him perennial consideration for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

“The Tale of KAHO” evolved from what began as a short story titled simply “Kaho,” which Murakami first presented at a public reading event at Tokyo’s Waseda University—his alma mater—two years ago. The reading featured a collaboration with acclaimed female author Mieko Kawakami, herself a noted admirer of Murakami’s work. The original story subsequently appeared in the June 2024 edition of the monthly Shincho magazine.

According to promotional materials, the novel centers on Kaho, described as a woman of average appearance and intelligence but with a deeply curious nature. The narrative takes a surreal turn when she dines with a man who bluntly tells her, “I’ve never seen one as ugly as you.” Rather than responding with anger, the intrigued protagonist becomes determined to uncover the hidden meaning behind his puzzling statement.

This encounter serves as a gateway to increasingly bizarre occurrences in Kaho’s life, leading her to declare, “I must find the way out of this world,” according to the publisher’s teaser, which promises that the “Murakami world is in full force” in this latest offering.

The complete novel incorporates and expands upon three additional “Kaho” stories that Murakami published in Shincho magazine following the initial piece. These stories—”The Anteater of Musashi-sakai,” “Kaho and the Termite Queen,” and “Kaho and the Motorcycle Man, and Scarlett Johansson”—have been woven together and further developed into the 352-page novel.

The first installment of the Kaho series has already reached English-speaking audiences through a translation by Philip Gabriel, one of Murakami’s longtime translators, published in The New Yorker earlier this year.

Murakami’s pivot to a female protagonist comes at a time when literary circles have increasingly discussed gender representation in fiction. Throughout his career spanning over four decades, the author has primarily constructed narratives around male characters navigating surreal circumstances, often featuring female characters in supporting or mysterious roles.

The author’s work has consistently blended elements of magical realism, detective fiction, and philosophical inquiry, earning him international acclaim while maintaining a distinctive voice that bridges Eastern and Western literary traditions. His best-known works include “Norwegian Wood,” “Kafka on the Shore,” “1Q84,” and “The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.”

Fans and critics alike will be watching closely to see how Murakami’s characteristic themes of alienation, parallel realities, and existential questioning translate through the perspective of a female character, potentially offering new dimensions to his established literary universe.

“The Tale of KAHO” is expected to generate significant attention in the international literary community, with translations likely to follow the Japanese release.
