Italy’s highest court has given the green light for a Ukrainian national to be extradited to Germany over his alleged involvement in the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline explosions, a case that has significant implications for European energy security and geopolitical relations.

The Cassation Court on Wednesday rejected the final appeal from Serhii Kuznietsov, 49, paving the way for his transfer to German authorities within days. According to the extradition documents, German prosecutors accuse Kuznietsov of orchestrating and executing the detonation of at least four bombs weighing between 14 and 27 kilograms each. Kuznietsov has maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings. His defense attorney, Nicola Canestrini, expressed confidence that his client would be acquitted at trial, asserting that Kuznietsov was serving as an army captain in Ukraine at the time of the explosions.

Prior to the war in Ukraine, Russia supplied approximately 40% of Europe’s natural gas, with Germany being particularly dependent on these imports.
