Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed Friday that he has undergone treatment for prostate cancer, making his first public acknowledgment of the diagnosis that had been kept private until now.

In his statement, Netanyahu disclosed that approximately 18 months ago, he underwent prostate surgery. More recently, about two and a half months ago, doctors discovered and treated a small tumor at Jerusalem’s Hadassah Hospital with radiation therapy – a medical development that was not announced to the public when it occurred.

“I requested to delay its publication by two months so that it would not be released at the height of the war against Iran,” the 76-year-old Israeli leader explained, adding that he wanted to prevent “more false propaganda against Israel.” Netanyahu characterized the tumor as a “minor medical issue” and assured the public that he is healthy.

The revelation comes after Netanyahu’s health became the subject of intense speculation during the early weeks of Israel’s conflict with Iran. During that period, fake images created using artificial intelligence circulated widely, including on Iranian state media, falsely suggesting that Netanyahu had died.

Medical professionals have confirmed the prime minister’s positive prognosis. Aharon Popovtser, director of Hadassah Hospital’s oncology unit, stated that Netanyahu was diagnosed at an early stage and noted that prostate cancer is common among men of his age. “We can say based on the findings of these tests that the disease has disappeared,” Popovtser said, referring to imaging and blood work that showed no signs of remaining cancer.

This is not the first time Netanyahu has faced criticism for delayed disclosure of health issues. Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, who is currently managing multiple military conflicts, previously came under scrutiny when he revealed he had a pacemaker implanted to address a long-standing heart condition only a week after he had fainted at a public event.

The timing of this health disclosure comes during a particularly challenging period for Netanyahu’s leadership. He is simultaneously overseeing Israel’s military operations on multiple fronts, including conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, as well as tensions with Iran. These ongoing security situations have placed extraordinary demands on the prime minister’s attention and energy at a time when questions about his health could potentially impact public confidence in his leadership.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer among older men worldwide, with treatment outcomes generally favorable when detected early. According to medical experts, the standard treatments that Netanyahu received – surgery followed by targeted radiation therapy – represent conventional approaches for managing the disease, particularly when caught in its early stages.

The prime minister’s decision to withhold information about his cancer treatment until after a critical period in the conflict with Iran highlights the complex intersection between personal health matters and national security considerations for world leaders. Political analysts note that health disclosures from heads of state often involve careful calculations about timing and potential impact on domestic politics and international relations.

Despite Netanyahu’s assurances about his health, the disclosure adds another layer of complexity to Israel’s already challenging political landscape. The prime minister continues to face domestic political pressures and international scrutiny over his handling of multiple conflicts while also managing personal health challenges that, until now, were kept from public view.

Israeli government officials have indicated that Netanyahu’s treatment schedule has not interfered with his ability to perform his duties as prime minister during this critical period for the country’s security.
