Israeli Forces Kill Two Palestinians After Apparent Surrender in West Bank

Israeli forces on Thursday killed a pair of Palestinian men in the occupied West Bank after they appeared to surrender to troops, an incident captured on video that has sparked outrage and accusations of extrajudicial killings. The Israeli military announced it has opened an investigation into the deaths.

The killings, documented in footage aired by Palestine TV and Egypt’s Al-Ghad television, show the two men exiting a garage with their hands up and lifting their shirts to demonstrate they weren’t carrying explosives. After being ordered to the ground and kicked by a policeman, they were directed back to the garage entrance. While surrounded by troops and on the ground, gunshots are heard and the men collapse. At least one soldier is visibly firing his weapon in the footage.

The Israeli military stated that the two men were “wanted militants” in the northern town of Jenin who had thrown explosives and opened fire at troops. It acknowledged that “fire was directed toward the suspects” after they surrendered and exited the building, adding that the incident was “under review.”

Palestinian authorities identified the men as Al-Muntasir Abdullah, 26, and Yousef Asasa, 37, and reported that Israel has taken their bodies. The Palestinian prime minister’s office condemned the incident as “an outright extrajudicial killing in blatant violation of international humanitarian law.”

Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir praised the actions of the Israeli forces, stating they had acted “exactly as they are expected to — terrorists must die!”

The incident comes amid Israel’s latest offensive in the West Bank, where military activities have intensified over the past two years. Human rights organizations and Palestinians have frequently accused Israeli forces of using excessive force, with dozens of unarmed civilians reportedly killed. Palestinians and rights groups note that Israeli internal investigations rarely lead to prosecutions of troops involved in such incidents.

Escalating West Bank Tensions

The shooting is part of a larger military operation in the northeastern region of the West Bank. Since Tuesday, Israeli forces have detained more than 100 people in the town of Tubas, according to Abdullah al-Zaghari, spokesman for the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club.

Israeli military officials claim the operation responds to “attempts to establish terrorist strongholds and construction of terror infrastructures in the area.” On November 19, Palestinian attackers stabbed an Israeli to death and wounded three others at a West Bank intersection before being shot by troops.

Israel has significantly increased its military operations in the West Bank since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack that triggered the Gaza war. Simultaneously, there has been a reported rise in settler violence against Palestinians. While Israeli leaders describe these incidents as the actions of a small minority, Palestinians report that attacks are frequent, often occur near Israeli troops, and rarely result in punishment for perpetrators.

Multi-Front Tensions Continue

As a fragile ceasefire holds in Gaza, Israel continues to engage on multiple fronts. The Israeli air force conducted another series of strikes in southern Lebanon on Thursday, targeting what it describes as Hezbollah positions to prevent the group from rebuilding after last year’s devastating conflict.

The United Nations recently reported that Israeli strikes have killed at least 127 civilians, including children, in Lebanon since the ceasefire took effect one year ago. Tensions escalated earlier this week with a rare strike in Beirut that killed Hezbollah’s chief of staff.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam issued a rare rebuke of Hezbollah on Thursday, criticizing the Iran-backed group for failing to disarm, deter Israeli airstrikes, protect Lebanese citizens, or even safeguard its own leadership. Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to visit Lebanon on Sunday to meet with the crisis-hit nation’s political and religious leaders.

American Teen Released

In a separate development, Mohammed Ibrahim, an American teenager held in Israeli custody for nine months, was released Thursday evening. The visibly thin 16-year-old, with his head shaven and still wearing a prison jumpsuit, was immediately taken to a hospital and emotionally reunited with his family.

“He’s skinny and pale, his eyes are sunken in and he still has signs of scabies,” said his uncle, Zeyad Kadur.

Ibrahim was arrested while visiting family in the West Bank, allegedly for throwing rocks at Israeli settlers. According to the Council on American-Islamic Relations and several members of Congress, Ibrahim said in an affidavit that he only confessed to stone-throwing after interrogators threatened him with a beating. His family and lawyers reported that he was held in poor conditions, suffered from scabies, and lost significant weight during his detention.
