Israeli Raid on Syrian Village Kills 13 in Deadliest Attack Since Occupation Began
Israeli forces conducted a deadly raid on the Syrian village of Beit Jin early Friday morning, killing at least 13 people in what Syrian officials described as a “horrific massacre.” The incident marks the deadliest Israeli attack since troops seized a portion of southern Syria approximately one year ago.
According to Syria’s state news agency SANA, Israeli forces entered the village intending to detain local men when they encountered resistance from residents. The military responded with heavy fire, causing dozens of families to flee the area. Syria’s Foreign Ministry reported that women and children were among those killed.
Local official Walid Okasha told The Associated Press that all victims were civilians. The casualties included a family—a man, his wife, two children, and his brother—as well as another man who had been married just the day before the attack.
Beit Jin resident Firas Daher described how the operation began around 3 a.m. when troops moved into the village and were met with “slight resistance, with light weapons.” The Israeli military responded with overwhelming force, including drones, helicopters, and heavy machine gun fire. “Whenever anyone would move inside the village or any car would move, it would get hit. When we tried to take injured people to the hospital, they would hit the car carrying them,” Daher recounted.
Israeli officials provided a different account of the events. In a statement, Israel claimed it conducted an operation to apprehend suspects from the Jamaa Islamiya militant group who were allegedly planning IED and rocket attacks against Israel. According to the statement, militants opened fire at the troops, injuring six soldiers, prompting Israeli forces to return fire and call in air support. Israel reported that the operation concluded with all targeted suspects apprehended and several militants killed.
This incident is part of a larger pattern of Israeli operations in the region since its forces seized approximately 400 square kilometers (155 square miles) of Syrian territory in December 2024. The area was previously a UN-patrolled buffer zone established under a 1974 disengagement agreement following the fall of former Syrian President Bashar Assad. Israel has maintained that the occupation is temporary and was necessary to prevent militants from moving into the area after Islamist insurgents toppled Assad’s government.
Similar deadly confrontations have occurred in recent months. In April, Israeli troops raided the town of Nawa and, when confronted by local residents, conducted airstrikes that killed nine people. A month earlier, Israeli forces killed six people in the village of Koayiah during a raid that led to clashes with residents. In June, a previous raid on Beit Jin resulted in the detention of several individuals whom Israel claimed were Hamas members—an assertion disputed by local residents—and the killing of a man whose family said suffered from schizophrenia.
Syrian officials have consistently condemned these incursions as violations of Syria’s sovereignty. Following Friday’s attack, the government called for “urgent action” from the international community to halt Israeli operations in Syrian territory.
The relationship between Syria and Israel remains fraught with tension. Israel has expressed suspicion toward Syria’s new government, led by former insurgent leader Ahmed al-Sharaa. Despite the absence of diplomatic relations, the two countries have reportedly been engaged in negotiations for a potential security agreement aimed at de-escalation.
The violence in Syria coincides with escalating military actions elsewhere in the region. Just a day earlier, Israel conducted a series of strikes in southern Lebanon, continuing its campaign to prevent Hezbollah from rebuilding after last year’s devastating war. The United Nations recently reported that Israeli strikes have killed at least 127 civilians, including children, in Lebanon since the ceasefire was established a year ago. Tensions further intensified earlier this week when an Israeli strike in Beirut killed a senior Hezbollah official whom Israel identified as the group’s chief of staff.
Israel continues to control the Golan Heights, which it captured from Syria during the 1967 Mideast war and later annexed—a move not recognized by most of the international community. Critics accuse Israel of exploiting Syria’s ongoing instability to extend its territorial control in the region.
