An Israeli airstrike on a Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon killed 13 people and wounded several others on Tuesday, marking the deadliest attack in the country since a ceasefire agreement ended the Israel-Hezbollah war a year ago, according to Lebanese state media and government officials.
The drone strike targeted a car in the parking lot of a mosque in the Ein el-Hilweh refugee camp near the coastal city of Sidon, the state-run National News Agency reported. The Lebanese Health Ministry confirmed the death toll but did not provide further details about the victims.
Hamas fighters prevented journalists from accessing the scene as ambulances rushed to evacuate casualties.
The Israeli military defended the operation, claiming it struck a Hamas training compound that was being used to prepare attacks against Israel. In a statement, the military vowed to continue targeting Hamas wherever the group operates.
Hamas swiftly condemned the attack, asserting that the strike hit a sports playground and denying Israeli claims about a training facility at the location.
This latest strike continues a pattern of Israeli military operations in Lebanon that have targeted officials from both Hezbollah and Palestinian factions like Hamas over the past two years. In January 2024, a drone strike in a southern suburb of Beirut killed Saleh Arouri, Hamas’ deputy political leader and a founder of the group’s military wing. Several other Hamas officials have been eliminated in subsequent operations.
The broader regional conflict intensified following Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack on southern Israel, which killed approximately 1,200 people and triggered Israel’s massive military campaign in the Gaza Strip. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, that offensive has resulted in tens of thousands of Palestinian casualties.
Just one day after the Israel-Hamas war began, Hezbollah initiated rocket attacks targeting Israeli positions along the Lebanon-Israel border. Israel responded with artillery fire and airstrikes, leading to an escalating border conflict that eventually erupted into full-scale war in late September 2024.
This most recent war between Israel and Hezbollah—the latest in a series of conflicts spanning four decades—resulted in more than 4,000 deaths in Lebanon, including hundreds of civilians. The World Bank estimates the destruction caused approximately $11 billion in damage to Lebanon’s infrastructure and economy. The conflict also claimed 127 Israeli lives, including 80 military personnel.
Although a U.S.-brokered ceasefire officially ended hostilities in November 2024, Israel has conducted numerous airstrikes in Lebanon since then, justifying these operations by claiming Hezbollah is attempting to rebuild its military capabilities.
Lebanon’s Health Ministry reports that Israeli military actions since the ceasefire have killed more than 270 people and wounded approximately 850 others, underscoring the fragility of the peace agreement and the ongoing tensions in the region.
The Ein el-Hilweh camp, Lebanon’s largest Palestinian refugee settlement, has a complex history of militancy and has frequently served as a flashpoint in the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The camp houses thousands of Palestinians and their descendants who fled or were expelled from their homes during the establishment of Israel in 1948.
Regional analysts suggest this latest strike may further complicate diplomatic efforts to maintain stability along the Israel-Lebanon border, potentially threatening the already precarious ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah as tensions continue to simmer throughout the Middle East.
