Polish authorities have thwarted an alleged ISIS-inspired plot to bomb a Christmas market, arresting a 19-year-old student suspected of planning a mass casualty attack. The teen, identified only as Mateusz W., was detained in late November at an apartment in Lublin by Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW).
According to Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesperson for the Minister’s Coordinator of Special Services, investigators believe the suspect had been researching explosives manufacturing techniques and intended to join a terrorist organization to carry out the attack.
“The purpose of the crime was to intimidate many people, as well as to support the Islamic State,” Dobrzyński stated in an announcement shared on social media. Authorities seized items related to Islam and digital storage devices during the arrest. The suspect has been remanded in custody for three months while the investigation continues.
The case represents a growing pattern of holiday-season terror threats across Europe. At a news conference, Dobrzyński referenced another case from June in which three 19-year-olds were charged over alleged extremist plots, including a reported plan to attack a school in Olsztyn.
“You are familiar with this issue from Olsztyn; now we have another example of preparing an attack before Christmas,” he told reporters.
The Polish arrest comes as other European nations have also heightened security around cultural and religious gatherings. Germany’s police in Lower Bavaria arrested five men on December 12 on suspicion of preparing an attack on a Christmas market in the Dingolfing-Landau area. Reports indicate that an Egyptian national described as an Islamic preacher had allegedly called for an assault during gatherings at a local mosque. German special operations forces carried out the arrests, with investigators believing the group had begun early-stage preparations.
In the United Kingdom, counterterrorism officials have intensified armed patrols and public alert messaging across London and other major cities. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Jon Savell highlighted large festive gatherings, religious services, and Christmas markets as potential targets, urging the British public to report anything suspicious as part of the country’s annual winter vigilance campaign.
The heightened alert status follows the tragic shooting at a Jewish Hanukkah celebration in Sydney, Australia, where 16 people were killed. “Sadly, as shown by the appalling attack on Sydney’s Jewish community during a Hanukkah event, we know they can also be a target for terrorist activity,” Savell said.
Christmas markets have become symbolic seasonal targets for extremist groups in recent years. In 2016, an ISIS-inspired attacker drove a truck into a Berlin Christmas market, killing 12 people and injuring dozens more. Since then, European holiday markets have implemented enhanced security measures, including concrete barriers, increased police presence, and expanded surveillance.
Security experts note that the seasonal confluence of large crowds, symbolic religious significance, and international attention makes these venues particularly attractive to those seeking to commit acts of terror. The timing of these plots also coincides with increased international tensions related to conflicts in the Middle East.
The Polish case highlights the continued threat posed by self-radicalized individuals. Security officials across Europe have warned about the growing phenomenon of young people becoming radicalized online, often acting as “lone wolves” inspired by terrorist ideologies rather than being directly controlled by organized groups.
Meanwhile, U.S. authorities announced they had separately disrupted a New Year’s Eve plot in Southern California, arresting four alleged members of an extremist anti-capitalist, anti-government group. The suspects were reportedly rehearsing coordinated bombings against sites linked to two American companies.
The arrests across multiple countries underscore the global nature of the terrorist threat and the increased vigilance of security services during the holiday season. Authorities continue to urge public vigilance while working to ensure celebrations can proceed safely.
