Israeli airstrikes have targeted a gathering of senior Iranian clerics who were reportedly meeting to discuss succession plans for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in an earlier Israeli attack, according to defense analysts.

The clerics, members of Iran’s Assembly of Experts, had planned to convene in Qom when Israeli forces struck the location Tuesday. This attack came just days after the strike that killed Khamenei at his Tehran compound on Saturday.

“This second strike would be another embarrassment to what has been left of the regime,” said Kobi Michael, a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies and the Misgav Institute. “It indicates intelligence dominance and superiority because any movement is detected, meaning they would feel exposed.”

Israeli Defense Forces spokesman Brigadier General Effie Defrin confirmed that the Israeli Air Force had targeted the building where the senior clerics planned to assemble. It remains unclear how many of the 88 assembly members were present during the strike.

The attack appears to be part of a coordinated effort to disrupt Iran’s leadership succession process at a critical moment for the theocratic regime. The Assembly of Experts is constitutionally responsible for selecting a new Supreme Leader, a position that has been held by Khamenei since 1989.

“As of now, the leadership would feel insecure and hunted, with all of their plans collapsing one after another,” Michael noted. “They would feel totally isolated and understand that the biggest risk might come from home — from a potential uprising next.”

This targeting of Iran’s leadership structure comes amid a broader military campaign by Israel and the United States. According to U.S. Central Command, American forces have struck more than 1,700 targets across Iran in the first 72 hours of what has been designated “Operation Epic Fury.”

The operation aims to dismantle Iran’s security apparatus and neutralize what officials describe as imminent threats. U.S. Central Command reports that targets have included command-and-control centers, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Joint Headquarters, the IRGC Aerospace Forces headquarters, integrated air defense systems, and ballistic missile sites.

Military analysts suggest that these coordinated strikes represent a significant escalation in the conflict with Iran, targeting not just military capabilities but the very leadership structure of the Islamic Republic at a vulnerable moment of transition.

The death of Khamenei has opened an uncertain chapter for Iran’s entrenched theocracy. The 88-member Assembly of Experts, comprised of senior clerics, now faces the challenging task of selecting a successor amid intense military pressure and potential internal instability.

Among potential successors previously discussed is Alireza Arafi, a firebrand anti-American cleric who has been mentioned as a contender to replace Khamenei. However, the recent strikes may have disrupted the succession planning process and created uncertainty about who remains available to lead the regime.

“We need strategic patience and determination, and in several weeks most of the job will be accomplished,” Michael added. “Even if the regime does not collapse, Iran will not be like we used to know.”

The strikes on Iran’s leadership meetings demonstrate a significant intelligence advantage that may have long-term implications for the country’s political stability. The targeting suggests Israeli intelligence has deep visibility into Iran’s most sensitive leadership deliberations.

“I assume that the U.S. and Israel will establish a very robust monitoring mechanism that will enable them to react whenever the regime tries to reconstitute its military capacities again,” Michael concluded.

Regional experts note that the unprecedented attacks on Iran’s senior leadership could potentially create a power vacuum that might be exploited by opposition forces or lead to internal factional struggles within the regime, adding another layer of complexity to an already volatile situation in the Middle East.
