Trump Cancels Iran Talks, Citing Regime “Infighting and Confusion”

President Donald Trump has abruptly canceled planned talks with Iranian officials in Islamabad, Pakistan, pointing to what he described as “tremendous infighting and confusion” within Iran’s leadership structure.

In a Truth Social post on Saturday, Trump justified his decision by stating there was “too much time wasted on traveling” and “too much work” to be done. He added pointedly: “Nobody knows who is in charge, including them.”

The cancellation comes at a critical moment in U.S.-Iran relations and amid growing skepticism about the long-held Western belief in a moderate-hardliner divide within the Iranian regime. Experts suggest that recent social media statements from Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, President Masoud Pezeshkian, and other key officials reveal cracks in what has historically been portrayed as a good cop/bad cop dynamic within Iran’s power structure.

“Iran is having a very hard time figuring out who their leader is! They just don’t know!” Trump wrote on X last Thursday. “The infighting is between the ‘Hardliners,’ who have been losing BADLY on the battlefield, and the ‘Moderates,’ who are not very moderate at all (but gaining respect!), and it is CRAZY!”

Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei swiftly responded to Trump’s characterization, claiming that “due to the strange unity created among compatriots, a fracture has occurred in the enemy.” He added that this unity has become “even greater and more steel-like,” while suggesting that foreign media operations are attempting to “undermine national unity and security.”

Regional experts point to significant implications for U.S. foreign policy if the supposed moderate-hardliner division is indeed collapsing or being exposed as largely theatrical. Mariam Memarsadeghi, senior fellow at The Macdonald-Laurier Institute, told Fox News Digital that the Islamic Republic has long used this perceived internal division to manipulate Western negotiators.

“Because of the war, the Trump administration is in a remarkably advantageous situation vis-à-vis the imperial terror state, one never before attempted, much less achieved,” Memarsadeghi said, while cautioning that Trump’s public statements about regime change could undermine opportunities for substantial reform.

Navid Mohebbi, a former Persian media analyst for the State Department, offered a more nuanced view, suggesting that while factions do exist within Iran’s power structure, they generally agree on fundamental principles and strategic direction.

“Their disagreements are primarily over tactics, not fundamental direction,” Mohebbi explained. “So-called moderates have never had the final say on key strategic issues and are often used to soften the regime’s image abroad.”

Mohebbi cited the example of former President Hassan Rouhani, who presented a moderate image internationally while his security forces violently suppressed the November 2019 protests, reportedly killing 1,500 protesters.

A regional official speaking to Fox News Digital maintained that genuine divisions do exist, but acknowledged their limited impact. Referring to current President Pezeshkian, the official noted, “he could not even make good on his campaign promise regarding internet freedom. To be honest, he’s not even been able to do s—.”

This official suggested that Iran’s power dynamics operate cyclically during negotiations: “Whenever Iran wants to make concessions, they throw moderates under the bus so that the moderates make a deal, and then, the hardliners blame them for the same concessions all of them had agreed to make.”

Lawdan Bazargan, a former political prisoner in Iran during the 1980s, offered perhaps the most clarifying perspective. According to Bazargan, what observers are witnessing is not the disappearance of internal divisions but rather the exposure of what those divisions actually represent.

“In reality, all of these figures operate within the same ideological framework,” Bazargan said. “They are all committed to the preservation of the system, the projection of power in the region, and confrontation with what they define as ‘the forces of evil,’ namely the United States and Israel.”

As the Biden administration navigates this complex diplomatic landscape, Trump’s decision to cancel the Islamabad talks signals a potential shift in approach to Iran—one that may no longer accommodate the traditional narrative of competing factions within Tehran’s power structure.
