Iran Seizes Commercial Vessels in Strait of Hormuz Escalating Regional Tensions

Tensions in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz reached a new height on April 22 when Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) seized two commercial vessels and attacked a third in what analysts describe as “tit-for-tat” retaliation against recent U.S. naval actions in the region.

Iranian state television broadcast footage showing IRGC soldiers boarding and seizing the container ships in an operation that has drawn international concern and highlighted the growing maritime confrontation between Tehran and Washington.

One of the captured vessels, the MSC Francesca, belongs to MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, a global shipping giant founded by Italian billionaire Gianluigi Aponte and now under the control of his children. The seizure has particular significance given the company’s connections to political figures in the United States and Europe.

“Some 20 Iranians armed to the teeth stormed the ship. Sailors are under Iranian control, their movements on the ship are limited, but the Iranians are treating them well,” a family member of one of the MSC Francesca crew members told Reuters.

Montenegro’s minister of maritime affairs, Filip Radulovic, confirmed to state broadcaster RTCG that the vessel is currently anchored nine nautical miles from Iranian shores. “Negotiations between MSC and Iran are ongoing, our sailors are fine,” Radulovic stated. Officials have confirmed that four crew members, including the captain, are Montenegrin nationals, while Croatia’s foreign ministry acknowledged that two Croatian citizens are also aboard.

Maritime intelligence firm Windward AI identified the IRGC’s actions as retaliatory following a U.S. naval blockade imposed on April 13 and the recent American seizure of an Iranian vessel. “The IRGC attacked three ships. It also captured and took in two of them—the MSC Francesca and the Epaminondas—while the Euphoria managed to get away,” Windward AI co-founder Ami Daniel explained.

Daniel noted that the targeting of MSC vessels may not be coincidental. “This is a ‘tit-for-tat’ exercise by the IRGC, which, along with the Houthis, has long claimed MSC is connected to Israel. Aponte, owner and chairman, has a Jewish wife, and MSC calls in Israel; however, so do all major liners,” he added.

The seizure takes on additional diplomatic dimensions considering the Aponte family’s connections to prominent Western leaders. Diego Aponte, Gianluigi’s son, has reportedly been establishing connections within former President Donald Trump’s circle. According to Bloomberg, he helped arrange a November 2025 White House meeting with Swiss business leaders that resulted in a preliminary agreement to reduce substantial tariffs on Switzerland.

MSC’s influential position in global shipping has also put the company at the center of geopolitical maneuvering. Over the past year, the Aponte family played a key role in a $19 billion deal with Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing, as MSC and BlackRock moved to acquire two Panama Canal ports. This acquisition reportedly came under pressure from Trump to place the strategic assets in “friendly” hands.

The family’s wealth and connections extend beyond American politics. Gianluigi Aponte and his wife Rafaela, who together control a fortune estimated at $37 billion according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index, have been photographed with French President Emmanuel Macron. Rafaela is reportedly related to Alexis Kohler, who served as Macron’s secretary-general from May 2017 to April 2025 and was often described as “Macron’s second brain.”

The second seized vessel, the Epaminondas, was also reportedly taken to Iran’s port of Bandar Abbas. The IRGC Navy claimed that both captured ships “were operating without the necessary permits,” though these assertions have not been independently verified.

According to shipping journal Lloyd’s List, the MSC Francesca, built in 2008, typically operates routes connecting the U.S. West Coast, Asia, and the Middle East Gulf, making it a significant asset in global trade networks.

The seizures come at a particularly sensitive time, as tensions between Iran and the United States continue to simmer despite recent diplomatic efforts to maintain regional stability. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, with approximately 20% of global oil shipments passing through this narrow waterway between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula.

Shipping experts warn that continued hostilities in this vital passage could significantly impact global energy markets and supply chains already strained by various geopolitical conflicts and economic pressures.
