Iranian Paralympian Forced to Withdraw Amid Escalating Middle East Conflict

Iran’s sole Winter Paralympics representative, cross-country skier Aboulfazl Khatibi, was unable to participate in the Milan Cortina Games due to safety concerns stemming from the intensifying conflict in the Middle East, the country’s National Paralympic Committee confirmed Tuesday.

Khatibi’s absence was first noted when he failed to appear at the opening ceremony last Friday. The International Paralympic Committee later explained that the athlete couldn’t safely travel to Italy because of the ongoing hostilities involving Iran.

“The recent events have been very painful for many people, and it is especially heartbreaking for athletes who have dedicated years of hard work and preparation to represent their country,” said Hamid Alisamimi, chief executive of Iran’s National Paralympic Committee, in an email to The Associated Press.

Alisamimi added that despite the disappointment, Khatibi maintains that “sport should always remain a bridge between nations and a symbol of peace.”

The escalation that prevented Khatibi’s participation began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched military strikes against Iran, just days before the Paralympics’ official opening on March 6. This timing made travel arrangements particularly challenging for the Iranian delegation.

The Winter Paralympics, which showcases elite athletes with disabilities competing in alpine skiing, snowboarding, biathlon, cross-country skiing, and other winter sports, has traditionally served as a platform for international cooperation despite political tensions. Khatibi’s absence marks a rare instance where geopolitical conflict has directly impacted an athlete’s participation.

Sports analysts note that this incident raises broader concerns about Iran’s participation in upcoming international sporting events. Of particular concern is the 2026 men’s soccer World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Iran’s qualification campaign for this tournament could be complicated by ongoing diplomatic and security issues.

The Iranian Paralympic Committee took a strong stance on the situation, with Alisamimi stating that Iran hopes “that the international sports community will take responsible action to condemn and suspend countries that violate human rights, so that the world of sport can stand on the right side of history and uphold the values of justice, dignity, and peace.”

This incident occurs against a backdrop of increasing tensions in the Middle East. Iran has been involved in regional conflicts both directly and through proxy forces, while facing international sanctions and diplomatic isolation from Western powers. The recent military exchanges have further complicated an already volatile situation.

The International Paralympic Committee has not issued additional statements regarding potential accommodations or alternative arrangements that might have allowed Khatibi to compete. Typically, the committee works to ensure all qualified athletes can participate regardless of geopolitical circumstances, sometimes allowing competitors to participate under neutral flags when necessary.

For Khatibi, the situation represents years of training and preparation derailed by factors entirely outside his control. Winter Paralympic sports require specialized training facilities and equipment, making qualification particularly challenging for athletes from countries with limited winter sports infrastructure.

As the Games continue in Cortina d’Ampezzo and other Italian venues through March 15, Khatibi’s empty spot in the competition serves as a stark reminder of sport’s vulnerability to global conflicts, despite the Paralympic movement’s enduring mission of promoting peace and inclusion through athletic competition.
